Took a drive early this morning to meet a kayaking partner on a river near Birmingham, Alabama. This was an absolutely beautiful river with clear greenish water and neat rock formations. The fishing proved very good and I got into some of the biggest bass I've caught in a small creek.
We got so many nice fish today, I'm just gonna post some of the better ones. Here's an all black gar that was caught on a crankbait. ![]() Here's a couple good'ns that my friend took of me ![]() Hefty spotted bass ![]() Here's an elusive Coosa Basin Redeye Bass that my friend caught. ![]() Hefty river largemouth ![]() My buddy with a couple pretty spots ![]() ![]() Here's a few of my other fish, Few more nice largemouths ![]() ![]() ![]() Then a couple spotted bass including this pig as my personal best ![]() ![]() And a few scenery shots. What a great day it was! ![]() ![]()

Down here, the flyfishers refer to us as "slinging hardware." Pretty good terminology really.

JnF, I always get a bit excited when I see that you've posted. This was another example of why that happens. Those are some great pictures and very nice fish!!!

Yep! I never get tired of viewing these photos Jump N Fish! I wish we here Nebraska could have the Spotted Bass population like down there. Can you post all the different speices of bass you've caught? Also are you in the green yak? How's the fish finder work in those little creeks? If you are ever up in Nebraska I would take down Salt Creek a world full of mysterious fish to you such as carp, catfish, maybe a walleye or musky, sometimes crappie did I mention carp?

If/when I move back to Nebraska I can't wait to try it out on the creeks and rivers. A skinny guy like me in this kayak only needs about 3 inches of water to keep from having to portage, but with a little speed you can usually slide over short areas or less like a tree down or rocks. I'm confident enough in this kayak, I'd have no problem taking it on the Missouri as well (with a pfd of course). Strangely I haven't seen a carp in any of these rivers/creeks yet. Lots of gar and sucker fish but no carp As far as the different species of bass I've caught, really have only been Largemouth, Spotted, and Redeye. But here is an excellent post by another kayaker down here that shows about every species of black bass that exist in the Southeastern river systems. Mississippi River Fishing :: View topic - What the heck kinda bass is that?

The pics look great, some healthy large mouths for sure. The gar is cool too, never seen a black one.
I always get excited when the thread starts with "Pic Heavy". There should be a rule that anyone who starts a thread must have at least 2 pics in it. I don't care if they're completely unrelated, two pics minimum! The more the better. |

Great pictures! Love the gar pix. Sure there aren't "gators" in them waters? Our bass are growing bigger now that you're there and not fishing our lake! Hope you make it back this way soon...Art
