[quote=DeerSlayer;155473]About time someone actually knows what they are talking about. It is not their right to just take the land form underneath you; wasn't this what Newport Landing was for? yet they are putting this less than a mile away form it. Makes NO sense. They took a house form underneath that landowner and then they moved over to Washington county, and now they are going to have to move again because of this. There are other options than this, and everything should be studied before they just go kicking people off their land, and where they make their living.[/quote
![]() Living in a small town and out in the middle of no where, that is all we have is our land to make our living. The job oppurtunites aren't there like in a big city where everywhere you look there is a job oppurtunity. But in a small town the land is where we grow our crops to feed the cows, pigs, chickens etc. Where do you think you get your meat from, just the grocery store. I dont think so, a farmer somewhere had to grow crops to feed the cows, and had to have the land to keep the cows on etc. So to just take land from underneath someone is just terrible. What if it was thier land to plant and grow crops or the graze the cows. I just dont think its right. I would rather drive an hour to 90 minutes to a lake than take someones land away from them. |

Growing up in a farming community, I know for a certainty the importance of farming. Unfortunately, the area is changing all around Omaha. People are moving in every direction into developments that have recently been made by the same farmers that as you said earlier, fought the dams because they didn't want to lose their ground, but when enough $ was offered, it sold. Look around Fort Calhoun and west maple street. Like I said earlier, I don't want to see people lose anything. That includes both the farmers and the people of Omaha who are now having problems with flooding. But times are changing, and so is the area. And, unfortunately, some of the changes didn't get thought thru all the way. I just want to see changes that are good for all involved. Hunters and fisherman as well. I just don't want to see southern Washington county turn out like other areas that have houses every ten acres.

I also look back and realize the importance of everyone standing behind trying to keep land and lakes public. We are coming to a time in which the only hunting or fishing places will be leased or just not available due to residential living. All across the state of Nebraska, large businesses are buying up ground from farmers to use for their own private fishing and hunting. If we do nothing and allow this. Our kids won't be able to go out for an evening hunt, or out for a couple of hours to drown a worm. I don't mean to get on a bandwagon here, but even if you don't agree with everything the NRD does, they are still trying to make things better. Call them, give them your input, and let them know that you do support them in their endeavors. the NRD is only as good as what we give them. I just got off the phone and had a good talk with them and they have a website as well.

Basically what you are saying with the "build it and I will Fish" attitude is showing no respect for the farmers whatsoever. It's like saying "I can't wait until that corner over there is 10 feet underwater, some good walleye's are going to be there." Would you say that to a farmer who lets you hunt his land? Or even one that doesn't? It just makes me sick that you people will stoop to those low levels and have this kind of mentality just so you can have 1 more lake in your arsenal.
Here's an idea: How about YOU move somewhere else where you can have all the lakes you want instead of stripping other people from THEIR land. Last edited by DeerSlayer; 10-11-2008 at 11:40 AM. |

Wow!!! As I wrote at the beginning, this is a very controversial and emotional topic that hits people personally. I have heard threats made at the public meetings in which people didn't dare show their support. Throughout the ages, people have been forced to do things that were supposedly for the better good. I'm sure that back years ago, the indians didn't like people coming in taking their land. Personally, I don't know if that was for the greater need though. Like politics, we all have different ideas on what is needed to make things better.
I think that we might have to just agree to disagree on this one. Back to the original question about wanting a lake. Put me down for one if they're getting handed out.

If it doesn't affect you personally, then why are you for it? That's the problem: if it doesn't affect YOU to the bone, then don't take it upon yourself to feel one way about something when it doesn't pertain to you. Leave it to the people who ARE getting flooded out, the people who CARE about their taxes, and the PEOPLE whose land is at stake.
Just skip the vote on the ballot when they ask you who to vote for unless you are going to think rationally about this. It affects people in many different ways other than you having another lake to fish fetish. Do something for EVERYONE and not just YOURSELF. |

It does effect me personally, due to increased taxes based on a faulty plans that are being pushed by others. Unfortunately, the people being flooded in Omaha don't get to vote on the Dams due to the dams being in Washington County. I am also voting on the NRD issue due to this same reasons mentioned above in which I have researched this topic extensively. I know where the people stand that are campaigning for the positions with the NRD and will vote respectively. Again, sometimes a person has to just agree to disagree. It's not a personal issue. By the way, it's not just a fishing issue and have never insinuated this.

One last note for you Bud: I guarantee all of the farmers whose land is at stake have worked harder and longer than you ever have. Any you just feel you have the right to take it away from them so you get another lake? These people don't farm just because they love it, their families have been there from generation to generation. These are the people that founded Bennington over 200 years ago. I hope you make the right decision come election time and think about everyone else irather than just yourself. |

I think that we both agree that their is much more to this discussion than should we have another lake or not. I also agree that this should be finished. Back to the original question, I'll still take an 88-acre lake in Sarpy County.
