Default Okoboji Trip

Hello everyone, once again I am going to Okoboji during the second week of October. We had a blast there last year and decided to make it a yearly trip. Last year we struck out on smallies but we still caught fish and had a blast. This year I am hoping to catch and release some big smallies! Does anyone have any tips or tricks for out there? Feel free to pm if you want. Thanks, Doug.

My inlaws are all from there, none of them fish though. When we go up i check the iowa dnr page. Gives a weekly fishing report, what's hitting where, and on what. I can't help with the small mouth because i have yet to catch one, mainly go after the eyes and pike,,the yellow perch are a blast too.

Try just north of pikes point all the way down the east bank to fort dodge point. Last year at that time we caught a mix of largemouth and smallmouth on tubes, jerk baits and topwater. The way the weather is shaping up this year, I would be sure to bring some warm clothes.

Double...

I check out the DNR site weekly to keep tabs on the lake:

IA DNR: Current Iowa Fishing Report

It seems to me that someone on this forum was going up there last year at about the same time, early October. I think they had great luck in and around the few limited areas still having weeds and cabbage especially if rocks and boulders were close. I know traditionally Gull Point can be good for smallies and

Just returned yesterday with fellow forum member DingerFlinger. We encountered the worst break in weather for a fall pattern. We got up there on Monday with temps in the high 80s(I believe thea actual high was 88). The very next morning the weather drastically changed and we started the first morning bite it a terrential downpour with a 41 degree air temperature and a high or 57. Almost a 30 degree difference. It never warmed up again past 66 or so.

As far as the fishing went we fished about 8 hours a day or so on average. We caught: lgmth, smllmth, walleye, pike, white bass, drum, bullhead, and bluegill. Most of the fish were pike and lgmth and all fish were caught on artificials. I think between the two of us we caugh over 50 fish for the trip. He has all of the pictures so hopefully he will post them.

If you wish to know my impressions on various places on the lakes P.M. me. The fish were very scattered and inactive to say the least.

I was going to post some of the pics but I lost them. I'm going to try and get them back. If I do then I'll post a few of them. Fish4fun has a cd of them so if it comes down to it I'll get a copy but it may take a few days. Hopefully it's not windy for you like it was over half the time for us. The waves got so big we could only fish in a few select spots. GL to you on your trip.
