Any new lake is great to me but the location with gas prices might slow a lot of people down.

Reed said he plans to meet with landowners soon to discuss the project and what his investor group has to offer. About 50 landowners would have to give up land for the 11,000-acre development. (2006 LJ article)
I may be wrong, but I heard about 49 of those 50 landowners told him to take a hike; they weren't about to give up thousands of acres of their best corn ground.

You heard Right OBG. I know a few of the landowners that were approached. There's no WAY that thing is going to happen on a private basis. If there is some sort of incentive for them do go in, or give up the ground, it might, but not the way it sits now.

Eminent domain. That there cornfield looks blighted.

Myself and TA2D tried to pay a lot of attention to the possibility of this large lake south of where we're from.

The gentlemen from Falls City that proposed it and had some investors ready to go was told no way. The Nemaha NRD took a vote and voted to basically wipe their hands of it and have no further involvement. We thought it was over.

However, a few months ago a gentlemen from Auburn is trying to resurrect the idea. Last I heard he proposed the lake for reasons of future water supply for the southeast portion of Nebraska, northern portion of Kansas.

I don't forsee it happening unless there is some form of Gov. involvement and using emminent domain for the land. Those farmers aren't going to give up that land.

We'll see...I'll probably live in the Ozarks before it ever happens. Later

Several years ago a decision was made to widen HWY 30 west of Lexington. The project would have "filled in" the ditches formed when the HWY was improved many years before.

A group of "wacko's" threatened a lawsuit ordering the "wetlands" (ditches) to be preserved, or replaced! The result of that threat brought the idea of building a "lake" outside of Cozad, "confiscating" (some call it "imminent domain") farm ground that produced income for the area farm family for "ages". NO value can be placed on a quality piece of land that can produce "forever", but payment on the confiscation would have ended that income!

To make matters even worse, a proposal was made to "carve" the lake into the shape of a Buffalo! I guess, the brains behind that idea owned an airplane... which would be the best way to view the proposed "shape".

In MY opinion, the proper shape would have been that of a Buffalo Chip. The whole project had a similar odor as well...
