I pulled the forget the plug before. Good thing was I caught a fish within a few minutes of fishing and the fish had a good hold of the hook. So I stepped down off of the deck to grap a pair of pliers when I heard splash and felt the water. Lets just say I did not handle that bass the most apporiate manner as i drop him in the couple of inches of water and left him swimming around in my boat with a hook still in him. Put my plug in from the back of the boat while hanging on to the motor only to pull myself back up and ended up slipping half way in and ruining my cell phone and soaking my wallet. Then I decided to keep fishing while the bilge pump out the water. Caught alot of fish that morning soaking wet in september. So many that I went to start the motor and had a dead battery from the bilge running all morning and still had water in the boat when I pulled it out. On my way back to the ramp some guys where loading up some duck decoys and had saw the whole thing that morning and gave me a hard time but I did learn my lesson. Have not forgot it ever since (knock on wood).

Default Sandbilly, Same ramp ...... different story.

dc

This one took place several years ago and will be shortened and cleaned of derogatory statements the best that I can. After making a not so successful trip to Big Mac one weekend my two brothers and I decided that the fishing had to be much better at Merritt. We had had a bearing problem at Mac and had had them replace on the trailer. We felt secure that all was well with the trailer. Oh, how wrong we were. As we pulled into the parking area at Beed's Landing we noticed smoke coming from the passenger side trailer tire. So we backed it into a parking space about 25 yards from the ramp.

That was as close as we were to get for several days. The trip up from CC town had done the bearings and spindle in. Luckily we were able to remove the axle from the trailer while we used rocks from ramp area to hold up the trailer. A trailer manufacturer in Valentine was able to have a new spindle and bearings shipped out and he rebuilt the axle for us.

I have to say that the friendliness of the Sandhill people will always be a hallmark to them. Not only did they come to the aide of this flatlander; but they did not gouge us like the guy at Big Mac. The bill for all of the work that they did in Valentine was less than the replacement of bearings at Big Mac.

It is kind of funny now; but at the time it was anything but funny. At least we were able to eat well at the casino and brother Kev won enough to buy a new pair of sandals. We took time to see the park and the old hatchery. And there are a few other sites in Valentine to take in also.

Upon return to the flat lands of central Nebraska; a new axle was ordered and put on the trailer.

Sandbilly, that is one of the best stories I've read on this forum. That's one of those situations where you're in so deep at some point you just say to yourself, alright, this is a total snafu, but how can we best salvage it with the least damage to ego and property. Well done!

Thanks Trout Bum. I'm quite sure stupidity and dumb luck held the majority of our cards that night.

Great stories. Glad to hear I'm not the only one with a boat ramp problem.

Jorg, I hope you sent the axle bill to Lake Mac.
Other sites in Valentine?

Mine will only do that when the motor is shut off, depressing the parking brake has to be done before starting it.

Funny story, dc. I'm glad I've never ever done anything like that...

6 years ago we headed out to Big Mac with 3 boats and 12 guys. We planned on fishing all day and evening and then tent camping on the sand. I decided to pull my boat out of the water at night and drive to where we were going to camp. After unhitching the trailer a halph dozen times because we kept getting stuck in the sand, we finally got close enough to walk to our "campsite". One of the boat owners decided to leave his boat tied up in the water about 20 yards off the beach. The wind came up that night blowing our tents (with us in them) all over the place. We ended up losing a couple tents and camping in the truck (luckily it is a four door). Next morning we went out to find the boat that was in the water sitting very very low. After hours of bailing with our dr.Pepper and sprite coolers, we had enough out to make a run for the dock. It still took a long time after getting the boat on the trailer to empty out all the water. Only bright side to the trip was all the walleye we caught

once again sorry for hijacking the thread.

don't worry about hijacking this thread, the passengers on this plane are dead and the kidnappers have the ransom money already
