Default What's wrong with this catfish?

Caught this little guy at Prairie View on Sunday. He looked like he had mosquito bites all over and his fins were a little bloody. He was also croaking like mad but that has nothing to do with the question.

Anyway, was wondering if he had some type of parasite or what as I've never seen a catfish that looked like this.

Thanks.

I didn't know catfish could get STD's. Sure you didn't catch it in Plattsmouth? Sorry, Steve...

Default I thought it was chiggers!

Having read a little about Sam's experiences, I never leave home without some pink fingernail polish. I didn't keep the catfish but did apply a little home remedy.

How long does pink fingernail polish last underwater?

It's hard to tell from the photo but because they are red and infected, I would say fish lice? Though fish lice normally attach themselves to the scales.

Most likely yellow grubs, which are more common.

I've seen tumors on catfish, but they were much larger and only a few of them.

A guy I used to work with got the same thing on his mouth after his bachelor party, but for some reason the wedding never happened

Apparently PV doesn't give their fish enough Ol' Roy. He didn't seem to have that nice shiny coat.

Good one Buglem!

Sorry I can't be of much meaningful help, I have no clue about fish diseases except for ich and bass thumb.

Hey!! Maybe it is catfish malnutrition because there are no feeders!!! I'm just sayin...

Best Fishes,
Jet

I have NO idea what is on that fish. Daryl would be the man for that.

BUT....it just looks uncomfortable. It makes me itch.

Default Here is the answer!

Thanks for the response Daryl!

Those are parasites. No, not chiggers, no, not fish lice. Likely they are a parasitic trematode spore. If you popped those "zits" open you would probably find a nice cream-colored little "alien" inside. If you look at the pictures you posted, it looks like that fish might have a parasitic round worm in its pectoral fin too.

There are a whole host of fish parasites that occur in the wild. Normally fish are in good health, not stressed, and they are able to fend off most parasites. If the fish become stressed, then parasites are more likely to infect those fish. Normally the fish will eventually recover and survive, but the fish you took a picture of has a severe infection and may not be long for this "whirl" (obscure Patrick F. McManus reference, sorry).

I just threw up in my mouth a little... Yuck!

Why did you have to give me a visual of squeezing the zits, Daryl... Nasty!

It's just a young "teenager" fish with a pretty bad case of fish acme. It will grow out of it but may become fluent in computers, band and drama class.
