Default How do you rig and use senkos?

I have heard a lot of people talking about senkos on here so I picked up a few bags today at scheels. Just looking to see how everyone rigs them up. I can see a lot of uses including weightless, carolina (even wacky hooked), texas etc. Do most of you just hook them like a worm throught the head past the barb then bury the hook in the body making it straight! Thanks for any info!

yep no weight. Sometime you won't feel a bit so watch your line.

I normally fish them texposed with no weight. Like Bob said watch your line because alot of time you dont feel the bite. Most of the time I will get bit on the initial fall after the cast and once you pick up your rod tip you feel a tap tap and then set the hook.

2/0 or 3/0 gamakatsu ewg hook weightless. vary retrieval speed. sometimes the slower the better, but sometimes ill actually use them kinda like a jerkbait. theyre weighted to flutter as they fall. you can carolina rig them or texas rig them, and you can catch fish, but they arent going to have the same action that they were created to have

I either fish them weight less or wacky, if you rig one up wacky run the hook through then spin it and stick the point back into the worm you can drag them through just about anything that way. +1 on watching your line almost always hit on the fall.

Tex rigged with the hook going through so the point is sticking out. I used to bury my hook all the way, now I don't and I'm catching more fish. Don't be afraid to let it sit for as long as you can stand it. On more then one occasion I have let one sit while I pick out a birds nest and reeled in the slack and had a bass running with it.
I have been using the manns hard nose senko type worms. They are a little more stiff so they don't have as much wiggle as a senko, but the fish haven't seemed to mind. They do hold up better then senkos.

I Senkos.

Default How do you rig and use senkos?

I don't know anything about bass fishing, but I have it on good authority that Shorty rigs them when his partner isn't ready...

I have a couple of suggestions for fishing with senkos.

1. Try a Weedless hook rigged wacky style. The one by gamakatsu is the best i have found.

2. Put a jig skirt collar or small O-ring around the senkoright in the middle of the bait. Then just put the hook through the hole in the skirt collar. You will be able to use the same senko almost all day!!! Saving me...and hopefully you ... lots of money!!!

I prefer to use std. heavy wire "J" hooks instead of EWG (extra wide gap) hooks when rigging Trick Sticks (aka Senkos), they go though the weeds much better, just ask my partner from Saturday, his EWG hooks gave him some problems fishing heavy coontail.

BTW OBG, it wasn't that my partner wasn't ready, he just failed miserably to follow through when a (very big) bass missed his buzzbait early in the morning, a rooky mistake that he will not repeat again. I taught him a very good lesson on following up a missed buzzbait strike with a weightless Senko.

I have had solid success with them rigged wackey, and also jerkbait style when I run out of jerk shads.

the wave tiki stiks at wal-mart are alot easier on the wallet than the original senkos.

Those senkos remind me of the $5 dollar malt in the movie "Pulp Fiction"

The Wolf Tackle Tricks Sticks are also much easier on the wallet too than real Senkos.

I've used the Yum version and they are priced ok. Will have to check out Wolf tackle.

I think basspro has some senko type worms called Stick-Os i beleive. I have heard they are just as good as senkos but have never tried them personally. but they look like there worth trying sometime.

Since it came up, where can one buy o-rings? I like those Tiki worms for the price but they have a very short life span when rigged wacky. I almost got suckered into the "Wacky Tool" at Cabelas..aluminum tapered tube that holds o-rings..but thought better of it.

do you suppose the rubber bands used for braces would work as well as the O rings?

O-rings could be found at any hardware store. Menards, lowes, home depot, ace etc. in the plumbing sections most likely...different sizes so make sure you get small enough ones. Smaller ones may not be in plumbing but ask and someone should know.

Actually...the Wacky Tool works good. BUT ... If you can find the old Jig skirt collar tool with 3 prongs. Hard to find I know. but it can serve multple purposes. Not only can it put the o-rings on... it also easier to put the jig collars on rattleback jigs.

I have found the BP style to not fall as fast as the originals and being tougher to use when a little wind is blowing. One other thing that has not been mentioned yet - as you drag them through the weeds, and they start to hang up, shake them there in the weeds. I have found bass to bite many times when I do this.... just my 2cents.

Good Luck!

Thanks for sharing your tips everybody!

I started getting back into bass fishing this year. I picked up some Senkos the other day at Cabelas and suffered a bit of sticker shock. Since everyone said they were the best bait on the market I went ahead and bought some. I did catch a big fat 21 incher the other day so it eased the pain some. I'll give the other brands mentioned a try.
