Decided to get out last night even though the weather looked sketchy. Right when we got to the lake it started to downpour and then rained on and off (sometimes hard) for about the entire time we were out there. About the last hour the skies cleared and the moon lit up the lake. It was about 60 degrees and the lake was like glass. What a weird and cool night to be on the water.
The fish were biting too! Jon got this guy between one of the rain showers. ![]() Then I got this one a little later on... ![]() I got another one right during a pretty decent rain shower. This guy was hungry! Snagged me up twice and I still got him. He swam out of the sticks 2 TIMES after snagging me up completely. What are the chances? ![]() Jon finished up the night with this guy. ![]() A great night to be out. Missed a couple other fish, too. Not bad for a few hours. All fish were released. Didn't measure them -- wanted to get them back in the water. Guessing they were all between 24" - 27". Bo

Nice fish, Burro. I've been wondering lately what a fish longer than 6 inches looks like...

When out at Wagontrain, If if you happen to snag a 6' St. Croix muskie stick with an Abu Garcia 6500 attached to it, please let me know.
I learned a lesson the hard way last night when a fish hit. Took less than a second for that rig to go overboard into the drink. Always, always, always double check your clicker and as a back up, use the rod holders on the boat. I did neither last night and kissed a $200 rig goodbye. Simple mistake, bigtime consequence.

Lousy news indeed...
On the other hand, the good news is that you have a perfectly good reason to go out and get a new Abu 7000! Just explain to your wife that none of this would have happened if you had kept your equipment updated.

Thanks for trying to cheer me up James, but I already have a 7000.
Honestly, the 6500 was the preferred reel. The 7000 is megadeath. Cool, but somewhat excessive.

7000 is a much better reel IMO , i just picked one up
. Also.. very nice cats there, I caught a 5lb channel yesterday and it really felt good, it had been about 3 weeks since I caught a decent channel. Yesterday was a long day, but topped it off w/ that channel cat and it was all worth it. Congrats on the fish. Bo dont feel too bad, i Lost 3 rigs in my lifetime trolling, and im only 24. However I fish about every day of the week, so its somewhat expected? I think? My uncle lost a 300 dollar rig last month at harlan county trolling, something ripped it out of the pole holder and sucked it down, what a bummer. But I know the feeling, however the most expensive one I lost is only a 80 dollar rig, the other 2 were 50 or less. Cheap 6 footers, but it still irritates you when you lose gear. |

Thanks Fishsplash. Congrats on the decent channel cat.
I would agree that the 7000 is a better built reel with all brass gears, etc, and is a more heavy duty reel. It's just that it is heavy, bulky and way too much reel for about 99% of cats you are every goting to catch compared to the 6500. Could you catch a 100 pound cat on the 6500? Yes, absolutely. Dont need the 7000 for that, really. In the right situation, the 7000 gets the call. River fishing with big live baits would be that situation, and I really dont do much of that.

Bo,
I just picked up a 6600 C4 about a month ago, and actually I’m starting to like that one better than my 6500. The gears are a little bit heavier than the 6500, and it’s a little smoother too, but it isn’t as big as a 7000 if you are concerned about size – in fact, it’s barely bigger than the 6500. Give it a look – I think you’ll like it if you haven’t used one already. JLK P.S. BPS had them in a combo deal for $159 matched up with a very nice medium heavy graphite rod – might be worth checking it out.

Bummer, Dog! Offer a reward to the person you catches your rig! We'd better figure something out this weekend chasing flatties in the Korn...REAL potential to lose a few rigs there.
