Default Free Fishing and Park Entry Day Will Be May 17

NGPC news release, 4/10/08:

LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska’s Free Fishing and Park Entry Day, Saturday, May 17, will be a chance for people to go fishing or visit a state park (SP) or state recreation area (SRA) and enjoy the experience without buying permits.

Although no fishing or park entry permits will be required on the free day, all other fee requirements, laws and regulations will be in effect. Anglers at Two Rivers Trout Lake will be required to purchase a daily trout tag.

As part of the Free Fishing and Park Entry Day activities, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will host Family Fishing Day events at several locations across the state.

Although the public is encouraged to bring their own fishing gear, tackle will be available for children to use, including rods and reels, bobbers, hooks, sinkers and bait. There will be Commission employees and volunteer fishing instructors available to hand out materials and offer fishing tips to the participants. Catfish or trout will be stocked at most of the lakes to increase the odds of everyone catching a fish.

Family Fishing Day activities are scheduled at the following areas. Contact them for additional information.

-- Alexandria SRA near Alexandria, 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.

-- Chadron SP near Chadron, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

– Fort Robinson SP near Crawford, 9 a.m.-noon

– Fremont SRA Lake No. 3 near Fremont, 9 a.m.-noon

– Lake Minatare SRA near Minatare, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

– Louisville SRA Lake No. 1 near Louisville, 9 a.m.-noon

– Eugene T. Mahoney SP near Ashland, 9-11 a.m.

– Platte River SP near Louisville, 9-noon

– Ponca SP near Ponca, 9 a.m.-8 p.m.

- Two Rivers SRA Lake No. 1 near Venice, 9 a.m.-noon

– Victoria Springs SRA near Anselmo, 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

Default Help!

I have the loaner poles for the North Park Holdrege Lake. Last year we had a family fishing event through the YMCA. We had it on free fishing and park day. It went pretty good. We had preregistration. Dinner, Tackle and Bait Provided. It went pretty good and I wanted to try it again can anyone tell me if I can make this Official? Or do I just continue to run it through the YMCA.

While I appreciate the fact the NGPC does the free entry and fishing day, I wish they would take a cue from South Dakota and make it a 3 day weekend. I think that would pull people in from out of state as well as get people out to make a weekend of it. Just seems like if you're only going to get one day, it makes it tougher to get a family to go take advantage of it.

Again, I applaud them for the one free day, just wish they would make it an entire weekend as I think it would have more impact on recruitment of future fisherpeople.

By incorporating the NGPC's Outdoor Expo during the week of the "free fishing day", there are actually four days of activities. Thursday and Friday promotes kids (bussed in from Schools) under 16- no permits necessary.

I'm curious if the permit sales take a healthy bump on Sunday! If not, it might be something the NGPC could consider... at least for Saturday AND Sunday.

The program is Nebraska's "contribution" to the National Free Fishing Day". Because of that, I'm also curious if there are Federal Funds available to States for participating?

Every $$$ little bit $$$ helps! And if permit sales on Sunday is a "boost", I'm all for our current program!

The free fishing/park entry day is set in statute, not regulation, so it would take an act of the Legislature to get it changed. But worth asking your Senator about if you feel strongly about it!

NEVER MIND... I misunderstood the clinic question. Carry on... Yes, contact Andrea Faas to make your event an "official" event if you do it on that day.
