Default garter snakes

I have a lot of garter snakes under my front porch. The porch is very large and I cannot access the underneath. I've tried to block off the access without any success. We have gotten too many snakes under there and it's starting to smell and my wife is freaked out by them.

I don't want to kill the snakes or get rid of all of them (keeps the bugs out) but I do need to get rid of most of them.

Does anyone have any ideas? Is there a humane trap I could build to catch and relocate them? I've caught some by hand but they are getting wise and duck for cover when they hear anyone coming.

Any help appreciated,
Thanks!

Call a press conference and announce the great 2008 Snake Slaughter.

Wait for PETA to show up to protest, and ask them to take them all.

Seriously, short of poisoning and or killing them, I'm not sure how you could remove them if you can't get access to the nest.

buy a couple of mongoose and shove them under there, the only problem is afterwards you will have a couple of really made mongoose to deal with but the snakes should be gone.

Could they be smoked out? Just wondering.

Referring to the above answer, how many mothballs would it take? Do mothballs eventually dissolve so you wouldn't be smelling mothballs forever after? Again, just curious.

I think even if you "move them away," they will come back. They are probably there because they have a food source there. If you get rid of the food source (insects and mice), you'll get rid of the snakes as well. I'd suggest trimming your lawn shorter, trimming out your bushes, and maybe laying out some rodent repellents or something like decon. Another thing you might try is to find a way under your porch and lay out something like bark or something like that. They obviously like the "bedding" you've provided for them. And by the sounds of it, it's hard to get under there so it provides a good nesting hole for them as well.

Bottom line... get rid of the food and the habitat, and you'll get rid of the snakes.

I have been told you can put salt around the area you want to keep snakes away from. But there are commercial products that are available to do what you want.

Take a look at the link below.

Can of gas and a match. Be ready with a hose for the house though. I know a lady that "lines" her yard with diesel fuel(around the fence) and swears by it to keeping snakes away.
