Default Another neat sighting

Seen this little guy while fishing the other day! I believe it's a collared lizard about 8-10" After I put the camera away he climbed on a red rock which would have made a much better picture..

Looks like the little guys I used to see at Glen Elder's spillway.

that is very much so a collared lizard, pretty popular in the pet trade. I'm not sure that they are native to Nebraska. Hopefully Mako will chime in.

Very cool pic, Thanks for sharing!

I wonder if that lizard is wild or someone's pet that they got tired of feeding. Neat picture anyway! I've never seen anything like that while fishing.

You know, I don't know if collared lizards are native to Nebraska. I've seen them in deserts in California and know they are desert creatures, but even though Scott Eveland tells us there's not enough water out west, I wouldn't call any of Nebraska a desert really. Just looked it up and it says they like "rocky hilly" areas so I guess Western Nebraska would fit. I guess I wouldn't be surprised if they made it up to Nebraska (I'm assuming it would be western Nebraska) or if somebody let it loose.

Mako doesn't know???? damn!

Andrew, if this was Eastern Nebraska, It was someone's pet that got loose, or was released.

I was going to use this site to try to sound like I knew something about lizards...

The Herpetology Database

However, the lizard page is "under construction." This is normally a pretty helpful site for learning about reptiles in Nebraska.

Thanks for sharing the pic!

So,does that concept go for mountain lions too?? Maybe the lizard hitched a ride on a mountain lion's back.

No, it looks like a lizard. Mako's sushi is what looks like bait.

Collared lizards are very native to NE. Some out west, some in the SE. Kansas is LOADED with them.

Those cute little lizards are the most blood hungry critters in the midwest.

Hey Scott,

I see you always chime in knowing lots about reptiles. How do you know all this? Another hobby?

Yes, I've had captives for over 20 years. Everything from tree boas to roughneck monitors. Even worked at the zoo for a few summers when I was younger.

Ill take a few pics when my collection is back up and going strong.
