Default Another Introduction...

Hello all.

My name is Bob ("ydoc"). UKcat told me about this forum as being a good place to learn more about, and to share information about Nebraska fishing.

I was born in Council Bluffs, but now live in NW Omaha... in fact, have lived longer in Omaha than CB.

My passions have always been racquetball, motorcycles, and yes - fishing. Growing up, used to go to Lake Manawa and fish from the banks. Of course, that was when it was SAFE for young boy (8-10) to get up at 4AM and ride his bike with his tacklebox over the bars and his rod taped to the frame, all the way from the north side of CB to the lake.

Every year, for as long as I can remember, our family only took one vacation per summer... and that was to north-central MN (Park Rapids area). I'd work any chore/job that I could to save money... for that glorious lure shopping extravaganza to (the old) Canfield's a week or two before the vacation.

Like most kids, started off fishing for 'gills and crappie. My dad would "bass-fish", but that was before electric motors. Why did it always seem that the WOODEN boats that came with the cabin had such squeeky-oars?? <lol> Anyway, that was my introduction to bassin'... (leaky) wooden boat, squeeky oars, and a Hula-Popper or Jitterbug. Spent many a foggy morning on the MN lakes, waiting for that strike. But don't mention mosquitos... the nightmares of fishing with a mosquito bonnet/net have just started going away...

I married my wife in 1992... guess where we went on our honeymoon? Yep, Park Rapids! She hadn't ever been fishing before (just bank-fishing). But, after her first 15" bass, she was hooked! (Pun intended!)

Heck, I've even gotten her to fish ponds with me out of belly-boats! And she even caught a hook in her nose from her son's cast. And she STILL loves to fish!

Fast forward to 2009...

I never could afford a boat. But since she hates my motorcycle (selling it by the way), I thought it was time to get one so that we could all (kids and grandkids) go fishing. I bought an old, small (14') aluminum fishing boat and old 18 hp motor. I already had a trolling motor (for the vacations to MN).

So now I'm looking for good places to go... without having to take a week off from work to do so. UKcat has shared some info about Pibel, Ericson, Grove, Goose, etc. And I know some about Elwood... and would like to find out more about other lakes in THAT area (Midway, Gallagher Canyon, plum Creek, Philips, etc.), and around here (Omaha/Lincoln).

I'm looking for "local" area "bass" lakes for the wife and me (always practice catch & release), and lakes to introduce the grandkids (3, 5, & 10) to fishing as well.

I'm used to fishing "clear" water in MN... with pads, rushes, reeds, wild rice, etc., so am also looking for fishing techniques for "Nebraska" lakes. Pretty good with spinnerbaits and crankbaits... but beyond that...

Anyway, thanks UKcat for telling me about this site...

ydoc, with your writing skills, you'll be a welcome addition to this site!

WELCOME to the board!

BTW, your boat would be PERFECT on Elwood. And the best choice, in MY opinion, of the fisheries "out here" that you mentioned!
