that is incredible! question to everyone... would you have the will to release such a fish??? I completely admire the guy for letting her go, but if you knew it was a potential world record would you have the heart to let it go? I am still trying to decide what I would do...

Ahh yes, Dale macnairs World record muskie I read about this the day after he caught it on another forum, Im amazed that he realeased it... If it was me I really don't think I would honetly have kept it, I think I would have released it... I don't really see any reason to keep it other than to get a certificate for the world record, I won't ever now for sure unless I actually catch a muskie of WR statis. I know for sure if I were to catch a nebraska state record muskie it would be going back in the water, no doubt about that

It's tough, I think I could release it, but I may cry the entire time. Downfall, that lake will probably get hammered, the fish will get caught and turned in.

Phishful, I think most of the guys actually targeting those big fish would tend to let them all go...

I think a WR will be 'officially' set by some guy who sort of 'happened' on the fish...as opposed to someone who has the consuming passion to chase them to exclusion...

Now, if I had a boat with a 60" livewell...

Default WR Muskie

I've seen this video/story as well.

I don't think you could find an avid muskie angler that hasn't had the keep or release discussion in the boat, or on the way to the lake as far as a world record catch.

A LOT of factors go into the equation for me. Speaking for myself and most of my boat partners, 95% of the time it would be released. A muskie that big though exerts pretty much all of it's energy during the battle, and if the fish is hooked during the warmest months, it might not survive. McNair was fishing the 1,000 Islands area during November, so the water was cold and the fish probably is still alive today.

I could go on and on about this (books have been written on the topic!), but I thought I'd share a few thoughts and call it good.

I would take , measure and release...without a doubt.

Why must the fish die to be a world record?

Totally incorrect. They change waters.

That's why people pay the $60 to get an igfa apporved hand scale. Weigh the fish, take pictures and measurements, let the fish go, and send in the scale for checking. You can get an IGFA C&R world record and the fish lives. Learned about that after I released a 5.9 lbs lane snapper in pensacola while the world record was still only 4lbs. C&R world records are getting more and more popular and I think is how all sportfish records should be if the fish is in good enough condition to swim off.

I'd rather not see such a beautiful fish in an outdoor store's aquarium when some kids could possibly jump in there and scare it.
