Default Spillway Ski

So which of you pros is gonna go rescue the big mama in the WT spillway? I went out last Friday since I was "sick" and checked it out. I had one little fish, 28"ish range, swipe at a crank at the bank. A guy on the other end brought in an 8-10 inch channel cat, and a nice one blew up on it right when he lifted it out of the water. He left so I hung out over there by the culvert that comes out. I watched that fish swim by for probably an hour. I would guess in the 38-40" range. I felt bad for it, cause there were about 50 scars on its back...probably been snagged a bunch of times already.

I was debating on whether I would break the law to get her up into the main lake if I caught her, but I never had to make that decision.

Default breaking the law

I haven't been down to WT yet this season. I'm certain of how I would handle that muskie, or any muskie for that matter that I caught out of the spillway.

I am pretty sure I have seen that fish down there, If not I have hooked one that probably could have gone 40 inches, and several other people have hooked a muskie in the 40 inch range so i would guess it was the one your talkin about because if it has been hooked and played a few times then it would be very stressed and thats probably the reason for the scars. All of the people that I have talked to that hooked the "40 incher" said they never actualy got it to shore. but here is the sad part, There was a guy dwn there with a bow that shot both a 41" and 42" muskie and took them home on a stinger Very dissapointing but its the guys decision. to be honest if I were to catch one of them I would release it into the main lake.

The kid that shot that 41 inch muskie turned it in to the game and parks, it is now the new state record bow fish. It weighed 17 lbs 9 oz. He also shot one that was 36 inches and a little over 10 lbs. This is not a rumor, I know the kid and he is 15, having that fish mounted by the way. Woody

I have had the pleasure of hooking the "big" one out there twice, but have never landed it. Both times I saw the fish as it jumped out of the water.

you might want to tell this kid that the size limit on muskies is 40" STATEWIDE. Daily bag 1 fish

Yeah, post some info on the kid. Tell him to take the 36"er in to the NGPC, too. Then they can give him his reward...

The question about letting muskie go into the main lake was addressed last year by someone from the game and parks.

They said that "technically" it is illegal, but if he caught them, he wouldnt say anything. I use to always do it last year. Just have to get in the water with them so you can properly revive them.

Is there a statewide limit on muskie while bowfishing? I thought i heard somewhere that there wasn't. How is that kid supposed to be able to tell the difference between a 36 inch fish and a 40 inch fish?

Hell yes, there's a 1-fish limit....bowfishing or otherwise. If you were told otherwise, your informant was mistaken.

And, if the kid can't accurately judge a fish's length before shooting, I'd suggest not targeting fish with a minimum length requirement...but you know what they say about common sense....

Personally, I wouldn't even say that "spillway fish" even count.... It's about as "sporting" as tossing lures at the fish hatchery, and just about as difficult.

Let me start by saying that the muskie in that spillway have about a 2% chance of survival anyway. 90 lines in the water at all times, 90 degree surface temps, are you serious. All I am hearing is how he shot an illegal fish, yet most of you complaining about it would transport this same fish to the main lake, pretty sure thats illegal as well. And the only reason that you would do that is because you all know full well that, that fish is dead if it doesnt go back to the main lake. This is petty bickering on a topic that doesnt matter in that particular water. And I was absolutely wrong, the kid I know shot the 41", and one of his friends shot the smaller one. I have no idea who he is nor do I care. My buddy was perfectly legal in all aspects whether you want to admit it or not. Woody

I'm glad you've deemed fishing regulations invalid on that water.

Dude, you came onto a muskie forum with a lot of members of Muskies Inc., possible the most extreme C&R fishing organization out there, to talk about your buddy shooting a couple nice muskie illegally. Honestly, what did you expect? Congrats on shooting the proverbial fish in a barrel.

Listen, I apologize for starting problems. I do not muskie fish, nor would I personally ever keep one that I have caught. Second I absolutely wouldn't shoot one. When I posted on this topic I had no idea the regulations on muskie, I was not trying to brag or anything else. I just thought that a new state record was worth posting. Again I am not trying to cause problems or forget the regulations, I have always done things by the book and will continue to do so. In my last post I was trying to state that I cant change what has happened, it is done and over. Again I apologize for starting all of this. Thanks, Woody

A new state record is worth posting, IMO. Some will cringe but at one time I had the record for wiper with a bow.

Better hope Andrew doesn't read this page...

Yeah, probably no reason to get upset about it. Frankly, I'm curious why it would even be legal to bowfish for species with a minimum limit.

Oh well...hopefully a majority of the ones taken out of there went back into the lake not into a pickup.
