So I fished the Berkley Big Bass tournament that was put on by Heartland Trail. This was a very weird format, that I have never fished before and had a TON of fun. Here is how it went.
No launch time, but can start fishing at 6. Meaning that you can be out on the water at like 4 if you want, but cant fish till 6. Then there were weigh-in periods from: 6-8 8-10 10-12 12-2 Then you use strategy to determine when you want to turn your fish in. I caught a 2.5 early in the morning and waited to weigh it till the 12-2 time slot. With 15 minutes left before we had to check in, my dad culled with a 2.88. That fish won us $200. We were then third, we think, in the 8-10 period and 10-12 period, but there were not enough boats to pay out 3. At Truman they were pulling A LOT of water out, so we focused our efforts by the damn, on the main lake between islands where the current would be strongest when it bottle necks. The first day we WHACKED the fish, using 10inch Berkley Red Shad in the morning and, 10 inch Berkley motor oil in the afternoon. We had to find the buck brush that also had tree's and lay downs in it. The 2nd day we hit our spots but only caught 2 keepers all day long. 1 on a "Frenzy Walker" in the morning, and then my dad caught one on a Red Shad 10 inch worm, but shrank by 1/8th when we pull him from our box. Fun tournament, and overall I would absolutely fish it again. Also, there were 3 different tournaments going on, Saturday of the tournament ![]()
