LINCOLN, Neb. – Boaters and anglers play a key role in preventing the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds recreationists that regulations are now in place to help prevent the spread of these species.

AIS are defined as any waterborne, non-native organism that threatens the diversity or abundance of native species, the ecological stability of impacted waters, or threatens a commercial, agricultural, aquacultural or recreational activity.

It is now unlawful:
-- for a boat that has been on a body of water to leave a launch area with water remaining in any compartment, equipment or a permanently attached container that may hold water. Baitfish containers are allowed but anglers are encouraged not to transport water from one waterbody to another. The boat livewell must be drained at the launch area, so anglers are encouraged to bring a cooler with ice to transport their catch to the cleaning station or home.

-- to possess, import, export, purchase, sell, transport or release any AIS into Nebraska waters.

-- to fail or refuse to submit to an inspection of a boat upon the request of an authorized inspector, conservation officer or peace officer.

-- to refuse to permit or prevent proper decontamination of a boat.

-- to leave a launch area with aquatic vegetation from the body of water still attached.

-- to use felt-sole boots or waders in Nebraska waters.

The new aquatic invasive species regulations may be found in Section 12 of the fisheries regulations: http://www.sos.ne.gov/rules-and-regs.../Chapter-2.pdf.

Boaters on major Nebraska reservoirs likely will be contacted by seasonal employees who will conduct interviews and boat inspections. Education and compliance by all boaters and anglers are a must.

Boaters who clean, drain and dry their boats following each use will lessen the chance that AIS will get spread to other bodies of water. In addition, anglers should clean their waders of dirt, sand, mud and vegetation following each use.

For more information on the individual species, visit: http://snr.unl.edu/invasives/pdfs/Fi...13%20Final.pdf.

Need to upgrade my trolling motor wiring in my 92 smokercraft. The trolling motor is wired with 10 gauge from the battery and I'm getting way too much voltage drop to my 55lb trolling motor. With the trolling motor drawing 45 amps at max speed, I need to run 4 gauge to run it. Does anyone have any suggestions where the cheapest place is that I could get some marine grade wire of that size? Or has anyone done anything similar to this in their boat and might have some tips on the best way to do it?

LINCOLN, Neb. – Boaters should not take safety for granted. Since May 18-24 is National Safe Boating Week, the Boating Safety Section of the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission suggests ways boaters may reduce the risk of incidents and help ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the water.

Wear a Life Jacket – Children under age 13 and anybody on a personal watercraft are required by law to wear a United States Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device. People being towed by a boat on skis, a tube, or other similar device also must wear a life jacket.

Avoid Alcohol – Boat operators can become impaired with less alcohol than motor vehicle drivers due to heat and dehydration. Boating Under the Influence is a criminal violation and is enforced actively in Nebraska.

Have All Required Safety Equipment – This will help boaters be prepared if an emergency occurs. Life jackets, throw cushions, fire extinguishers, and bailing devices are required on most boats. For a list of what is required on a boat, check out the 2013 Boating Guide at www.BoatSafeNebraska.org.

Be Wary of Surroundings – The best boat operators constantly are looking around for other boats, personal watercraft, swimmers, stumps and other hazards. Speeds in excess of 5 mph are prohibited if within 30 yards of any other vessel, swimming area or dock.

Take a Boating Safety Course – Anyone born after Dec. 31, 1985, who operates a motorboat or personal watercraft in Nebraska must have successfully completed the Nebraska boating safety course. Visit www.BoatSafeNebraska.org for a list of classes.

I have a Jon boat that has a small deck on the front of the boat, problem is that it sits too low for me to mount a trolling motor on the bow. I'm looking to build a larger deck around it so I can add some storage below the deck, and mount the trolling motor on the bow. I'm hoping to find someone who wouldn't mind getting paid to do it as an odd job but not having much luck finding someone so I think I'll be doing it myself. Any suggestions before I start or how to structure it etc....?

It is that time of year! Lots of classes to choose from. Take it now, as my summer many of the instructors are off doing other things and the class offerings drop off.

Full class list at www.boatsafenebraska.org

Anyone born after 12/31/1985 is required to complete a boating safety course before operating any motorboat (including personal watercraft--Jet Ski, Waverunner, Sea Doo, etc.) in Nebraska. The minimum age to operate is 14. Students turning 14 this calendar year may take the class in advance of their birthday.

Adults are encouraged to attend as well. Come with your youth, or come on your own! Most insurance companies offer discounts for completing the course.

I recently purchased a 12 ft Tracker Topper Jon Boat that came with only a trolling motor. I was hoping in the future to use it on the Elkhorn River or maybe even the Missouri. I assume I will need an outboard motor to get where I'm going.

It looks like the boat is rated for up to a 6 hp outboard motor. I find 6 hp Mecury's with a 20" shaft. Will that work on a shallower river like the Elkhorn? Is there another option I am missing?

Any input is appreciated.
