Question Power auger motors

Just started ice fishing the last couple years and the hand auger is killing me. Looking at a couple models. Eskimo's new motors are 1.8 hp and 43cc, 8" blade or 2.1 hp with 51.7cc. 25:1 gear ratio. Compare that to Strikemasters new Solo motor, it's 37cc with 2hp. 40:1 gear ratio. I am leaning towards the Eskimo 51.7cc. due to the larger cubic inch but the Strikemaster is 4 lbs lighter. Any advice which one to go with. I think I will stay with a chipper blade as sometimes I get into sand and dirt in the ice.
Thanks for any help on this.

Review Cold weather Suit

Fedex showed up today with my new Ice fishing suit. I ordered the Artic Armor by idi.gear. This is a two piece suit that is made from Insultex. I guess why I choose this over so many on the market was that it floats. The extra saftey is allways important as I fish alone most of the time.

I purchased this online from Dave Weber, owner of pro fishing supply . I cant say enough about his customer service so give him a try.

I would like to know if anybody else has tried this suit?

Cedar Vue bayside ramp, water is getting close. It is out of the shot to my right, but there is some serious damage to this ramp due to erosion, so it will need some major repairs that may be slow in coming due to the budget crisis.

heading tonite for one last trip to Boji. Not sure what to expect other than very cold water. Havent been up for several weeks so not sure what will be biting. I can just tell you this though, last November I had amazing success up there on largemouth bass, in very shallow water, with temps right at 41-43 F. And what was most amazing was it was a spinnerbait bite! I would wake a bright perch colored skirted spinner alongside remaining docks in upper gar and minnewashta and just slammed bass. never seen anything like that in my life with water that cold. They would blow out from cover and blast the bait but it had to be moving fast. Gonna try this tactic again but wouldnt hold my breath thinking it will work again, may have been a fluke bite. Will post some pics (hopefully I'll catch somehting to snap a shot of) and file a report when I get back. Weather is supposed to be near 50 tomorrow and saturday with high winds on sat.

Made a trip from Grand Island to Lincoln yesterday to buy this "bad boy" Otter Team Wild 2 flip over from Wolf Tackle Shop. Had never met Glenn before other than talking to him on the phone. When I got there we loaded the flip over up and I headed in to check out his store. I was quite suprised how much stuff he had and quality stuff I might add. Even got a glimpse of the newly arrived ICE FISHING STASH:ayes:. I made the trip from Grand Island so I would strongly encourage anyone from outta town that may be headed to Lincoln to stop by and check out his store. Lets remember to support the small local guys too!!
Quick Story: Well, I took the wife along and she said she would sit in the truck and wait, and if mines like anyone elses, I knew I was gonna hear it when I got back to the truck, cuz you just dont go in a sporting goods store for a couple minutes. So I get to the truck and here it comes, "I was wondering when you were coming??" I was like, geez I wasnt gone that long, but apparantly while I was inside, a couple older gentlemen walked over to my truck and opened it up not knowing she was sitting in it:lol: She said "hello" and one looked at her and said "O, we were just admiring your truck" Had to laugh, cuz I bet the next time I go she passes on the trip.
Anyway, like I said, if your in Lincoln, please take the time to go visit Glenn at Wolf Tackle, you'll be glad you made the trip

Opinion Needed Ice Augers Jiffy or Strikemaster

I will be buying an ice auger this year and am trying to decide what to get. Obviously I want the best value for my money and something that is going to start easy, cut well, and be relatively maintenance free. The question is do I get a Jiffy or Strikemaster brand auger? Two models I'm really considering are the *Jiffy Stealth STX™ Ice Auger* and the*StrikeMaster® Lazer Mag™ Xpress Ice Auger. *I'm fairly certain I want an 8" auger anyone have any pro's/con's on any of these augers or is there something else I should consider. Thanks! Oh yeah...I need to just buy one already so I stop going and looking at them in the stores and end up buying ice jigs that I don't need!

So my friend has been making his own lures for a while and his swim baits are by far the coolest things ever. I met him through college fishing and he graduated from Purdue University on the deans list, with a Major in Fisheries. Really cool dude, and down to earth guy. We went to the classic, and I used his swim baits at state, but unfortunately LOZ state wasn't a swim bait bait. But he just made a really cool Green Sunfish that swims amazing. he is in the process of making youtube videos. Paul Elias has used his baits at Falcon this year and like LOZ it wasn't a swim bait bite but the action is incredible. They are not for sale, he just loves to make them.

Question Lead Ban

Washington State is looking at a lead ban - no lead weights under a half ounce and jigs under an inch and a half would have to be a lead alternative.

Of course, there are widely mixed responses. American Sportfishing Association (the tackle manufacturers trade association) came out strongly against the proposal.

Some waterfowl / bird and other outdoor and environmental groups are for it, some against.

Minnesota has tried it (and wound up with a very effective educational campaign instead) as has Illinois (earlier this year). National Parks also tried it. Public outcry is usually really strong when the issue is raised.

Depending on what study you look at, as many as half the loons found dead in nature died from eating lead. Other waterfowl and bald eagles die from lead, and we don't want lead in our drinking water supplies. We also freaked out (as a consumer nation) when it turned up there were traces of lead in toys made in China.

What are your thoughts?
