You can bemoan your circumstances all you want... that's your choice. But to imply you'd be better off at war is a serious insult to folks who are separated from their families and whose lives are in danger every day.

Cheer up fishsplash. Go make your life what you want it to be. Your not powerless. :d

I guess I dont see how you blame the government for you being in hardship. I dont make that much and live life to the fullest anyway. I dont drive a nice vehicle or live in a nice home. I just do what I can and hunt/fish all I can and spend time with my boys......... and sometimes my wife. :| HEHE

Compared to every country in the world we have it best.

If you want "FREE" healthcare across the states just remember that somebody has to pay for it and that will be us thru taxes so theres no such thing as free.

I keep reading the ***** and moans and tried to stay quite but I can't. Your life is what you make of it. No one is going to give you anything. I worked a dead end job for 21 years because I was afraid to do anything else and was good at was I was doing. When I finally left I found out the grass is greener and I can do what ever I want. I graduated college last year at age 47 while working full time, now I'm even more qualified to expand my horizons.

If you don't like what you are doing, then it is up to you to change it.

Very well put Chad, fishsplash congrats on taking a risk and going back school to make a better life for your self that is very commendable.
Fishsplash believe me when I say it could be a lot worse, life is what you make out of it. Do insurance rates suck yes, I agree with that statement but to say that the American dream is dead is wrong. I only know you from your posts but you have a wife and a young son and from the numbers you stated you make enough to provide for them and to some that just might well be the American dream.

I'm sure there's more than a few soldiers that would be happy to trade you positions.

If you would rather be at war then it is time for you to join the armed forces. ( we got a war going on you know )

my my look what i've stirred up.

i think we've all made our points ;o i'll be honest, maybe it's just that this week has been hell, and maybe this week i've felt like "my" american dream is frittered away. maybe thats why my views have been a little harsh lately. , i dont know.

pls dont take any of my opinions the wrong way.

you're right, though... life is what you make of it, to an extent though. You can only do so much with the resources you have. It's going to take alot of work for me to finish my bachelors and continue to work all the time. but im tired of it, im tired of going on job interviews, knowing darn well I am qualified for the position, only to have my resume overshadowed by other candidates with a degree in an unrelated field. its tough out there.

life isn't as horrible as it could be I guess. thanks for ur kind words
atleast i have my health, my family, job security, and fishing. and I will be returning to school soon, and then hopefully in a few years I can look back on this post and laugh.

Darn right it is going to take a lot of work to finish it, but I'm sure with your work ethic there fishsplash that you can get it done sooner or later.

IMO, too many people think that a college degree is THE ticket to $.

I spent 7 years in college and have a couple of degrees to show for it. I'm glad I did it because I work in a field I really enjoy that requires those degrees. But, even with 2 degrees, I started at 24K. Employers don't just hand over the cash cause you got a few letters behind your name. I'm fairly confident that I could have spent 2 years in a trade school or community college and started at close to 24K... maybe more. I'm also fairly confident that I'd be making about the same as I'm making now.

My point is, don't go to college to make more money. Go because: 1) you want to; or 2) the field you really want to work in requires it. That's all.

I agree, i'd just like to finish my computer engineering degree, along with the two certs i'll have completed by jan. GCIA/GCIH, im into computer security so the GCIA/GCIH are a unique cert to have in the forensic/intrusion prevention/analysis area.

I dropped out of high school, got a ged, landed a GREAT job a few years later for almost $50k/yr as a network admin for a small company in dallas,tx for 2 years, and they hired me because of my experience and skills and IT background, not because of a piece of paper. The manager made it very clear that he was impressed by my skills and knowledge, and never mentioned anything about me "only holding a ged". Thats the kind of company I like, one who recognizes talent and skills. But then you've got the companys who act like a degree is the main factor in deciding on a candidate- ugh.

And I just missed a great opportunity for another IT company in the LNK area, was down to 2 candidates :/ (this was just recently so i was pretty bummed about that) I'm just going to keep trying, despite everything. I am sure again I will find a nice IT position with a good company.

Just all the normal stresses of everyday life in fishsplash shoes
well this has all really made me feel better, despite the negative comments. thx fisherpals.

Hang in there Fishsplash. I know what ya mean, sometimes we all have "those" weeks. There's a great group of guys on here, even though I haven't met many, there always here for ya. Just like when everyone supported Jeremey after he lost his job. I think this goes to show how us fellow fisherman take care of each other. Try to get out and wet a line this weekend and enjoy. I'm hitting a farm pond this weekend, I'll be all joining my dad which I cant wait for. Nice and quiet and catching some Cats. I dont have all the money or fancy stuff....but times out at the farm pond are pricless to he and I. It's a great place to escape the real world.

In the words of Joe Dirt..."Life's a garden, Dig it!" :d

Fishsplash,

Don't underestimate the value of a "piece of paper." A degree shows that a person has the committment to FINISH what they start and that they KNOW HOW TO LEARN.

Those without degrees may have these qualities, but when hiring them, you simply have to take their word for it.

Hiring a degree-holding individual (even if the degree is in an unrelated field) gives the employer reasonable assurance that the person being hired can FINISH what they start and that they KNOW HOW TO LEARN.

That's what degrees show employers.

Consider also a CEO who has to answer to a board of directors why the network was down for 72 hours during peak selling season. The board finds out that the network administratror working for the CEO doesn't have a degree? Who do you think is going to be looking for a job right along with said network administrator? Yup, the CEO.

Like it or not, and for several reasons, the business world requires a degree. Quit complaining about it and get er' done!

Food on the table "the right to go choose what food to place on your table" , TV "the choice to watch what you want" , fishing & hunting "a passion shared by many" , driving around to & from "something so trivial that many still cannot do" ... America may have its flaws but I would live nowhere else and I can say I agree fully about having some bad days but then as you mentioned fishsplash a day comes by to lift ones spirits and to think what makes me happy is (2) thermoses of coffee along with a couple rod & reels and to set on the bank of the River ... That there to me personally is the American dream and it may not sound like much but to me nothing is better ...

Give me the lottery and granted I would spend the money but not for one minute don't think that old bank on the River wouldn't still see me ...
