Heck I would vote for ole Ben just because of the turkey farm commercial. That gave Nelson more publicity than it did for the other guy, what is his name? Sounds like something that you catch after eating bad pie.

(Sorry to lead your thread so far astray, but I kinda like the idea of linking rope to politicians.)

Is that too harsh?
Yeah it's probably not bad if you have all of those things, which some people are not fortunate enough to. I hate to go into my personal life, but I can assure you i've worked my butt off for the last 7 years, I don't drive the best car, I dont eat three meals a day (very rarely), Yeah I have heat. Healthcare is an absolute joke to me, most companies cover very little, and charge up the *** for coverage that you may never use. Healthcare should be free for every american citizen. Pursue the highest level of education? How? I work 60 hours a week with 2 jobs just to pay the bills and eat a decent meal, no time for me to re-pursue my bachelors., doesn't seem physically possible, unless you're a college student who mom and daddy bought your way into school. I can't choose any career I want, you have to have a piece of paper stating you are a supposed "expert" in said field. I have alot of IT experience, and companies refuse to hire me due to my lack of certification. My annual income is far below average, I useto live far above average, so I know what its like to think things aren't that hard, when you have money, they aren't... .. but try living below the avg level and then re-think everything you just said.

I'll stop now before I overload the board with text.

I have and it sucks, but that doesn't change the fact that the standard of living is far worse almost everywhere else. That's my point.

And my mommy and daddy didn't pay my way through college. I have $18,000 in student loans. Best investment I ever made. Lots of people out there like me.

I understand your frustration though fishsplash, trust me.

Anything and everything I have is a blessing and there are no guarantees in life, that's for sure.

Fishsplash - Don't take this the wrong way, but you can do pursue a bachelors you just have to take steps instead of leaps. I have been working 40 hours a week since I was 16 (20 hours a week from the day I turned 14-16). I started college at 17 yrs old. I didn't do so well (the party bug got me my fresh and soph year at UNO). I didn't know what I wanted to do, so I decided to go to Metro CC for awhile and dabble in things. I chose to go into Mechanical Engineering and Design. I was working two jobs, one 40 hours a week and one 22 hours a week and one semester I had 31.5 credit hours at metro (doubled classes are 9 credit hours instead of 4.5 and had to get the campus pres. to sign off on it) for a total of 4 4hr classes (not that I always went to everyone) on top of a 62 hour work week, WHILE trying to get some fishing in. :d I paid my own way through metro and am paying my own way through Lincoln. Since graduating with an associates in the spring I have been given many opportunities, one and current opportunity is I am working at an Architectural/Engineering firm doing Medical and Hosptial Planning and Coordinating and I love it, however it wasn't what I went to school for, that peice of paper opened this door and with the knowledge on how to use systems here already it helped. So you see not everyone has mommy and daddy to fall back on, I sure wish I did, but they have three other (younger siblings) to watch out for and pay for and I can not rely on them for money for school nor would I want to.

As far as health care, I agree with you, it is a joke. It definately needs to be revamped. My GF's mother is pulling some s**t right now on her where she is going to try and drop her from her health care while my GF is in school still (GF's mom is a headcase). When my GF was paying her own health care before it was 387 dollars every three months, because it wasn't affiliated with any job she had. I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Nebraska and pay 50 bucks a paycheck, for the premium service...and still think that is a little high. I will be turning my services down a bit at the beginning of the year. There are countries that supply healthcare to the people they govern, however I have heard some of them are going bankrupt and others aren't well in placed systems. We are doing about a 6-billion dollar project soon up in Canada that is supposed to revamp the healthcare in that region and be a renowned hospital in all of Canada and upper U.S., after seeing some of the equipment proposed for it, there will not be a single hospital that will come even as close as it will in healthcare and technology.

Ok, I'm done writing. My fingers hurt.

Sorry for that long schpiel, I just hope the candidates who get elected help with our education and health care systems. I'm also tired of people who don't deserve money to go to school being given everything and an average Joe like myself can't get a dime of government money that I pay into for a grant or scholarship to go to school. I'm done...

you think $50 a paycheck is high for insurance?

I paid $687 a month when I worked at Cornhusker for wife, baby, and me. Its nuts.

I have decided on Ben Nelson, I listen to Pistol Pete try to put down Ben for working with Behlen Manufacturing and saying that was bad.

What is bad about helping a company that employs 750 Nebraskans get Gov't contracts? Should the Gov. of NE be trying to give the contracts to Kansas?

That's a very good point flushmaster. As a Democratic Senator from a Republican State who has been know to break party ranks on more than one occasion, Ben's senate votes are important for the current administration. Nebraska has received a lot of "perks" in the last couple of years (including our governor being appointed as secretary of agriculture). I've wondered how much of these perks are about "Courting Ben." Not a bad political game for Nebraska when you think about it.

It was a party-line vote, Nelson being the only Democrat voting with the majority. This is not long after Nelson earned the dubious distinction of being the only Democrat to vote against funding for embryonic stem cell research. If the Senate is more closely divided next term, liberals will need to bring some pressure to bear on guys like Nelson.

You're right, its not high. It's ridiculous.

If it's so cheap why cant the company pay for it? That $50 could be the difference between me eating for a week or having supposed coverage. I've only been with 1 company who paid full benefits, I highly respected that. And GOD do I miss that benefit.

I remember working for a company it was $560/month for full coverage for me and my family, while I brought home a measily $2000. Oh, and the maximum amount they would pay out in a rolling 12 months was $5,000. Odd considering = $560 * 12 months = $6720.

So even if you did decide to purchase coverage, you were actually paying the company $1720 over their maximum coverage amount.
Neat concept!

I love the way america works! I love it so much I can't wait to go out and get a wonderful job that pays $8.75/hr and provides me with "EXCELLENT BENEFITS", which include $560/month full coverage, oh yeah I forgot that excludes dental and vision. Don't forget the 10% employee discount you receive on items that are already marked up 300-500%.

I LOVE AMERICA!

You know why they call it the american dream? Because you gotta be asleep to believe it.

Or maybe think of it this way...there is absolutely no law requiring a company to provide you or your loved one's health insurance. Try paying for it all on your own...you'll pay a ridiculous premium and pay for just about everything else out of pocket.
