Wife decided she wants a home made ice cream maker for Xmas. Problem is I have no clue what to get or where to start looking. Any suggestions?
Her family is really into it and I believe they use the vitage wooden ones quite a bit.

The hand-cranked ones make better ice cream than the motorized units, Obert. It has something to do with sitting on the edge of the lawn chair and holding the bucket between your feet as you turn the crank on a hot summer day; salt from the perspiration dripping off your forehead melts the ice at a lower temperature!

Oh, I dunno. You can always get her two gallon size Ziploc bags, a box of salt and a bag of ice. That's how my kids and I make it while camping...
Seriously, you can probably pick up both kinds of makers at most of the big box stores, or even at places like the gift area of Cracker Barrel. It'll also save you the cost of divorce proceedings. ![]() |

![]() Do you have an Ace Hardware up your way, Obert? If so, they might be worth a call, too. I'm pretty sure our Elkhorn Ace carried them last summer. I bought my last one at a garage sale for $1.

Yep, there is one in Yankton. Will have to check that out. Thanks for all the info all. Well, the making of butter might have been a little much...
![]() I'm starting to dislike these search engines like google and yahoo. All I ever get is a bunch of advertisements from places I've never heard of and no info. ![]() Edit:Okay, I guess I googled right this time. Is there a big difference between the wood and the plastic ones, besides the $60 price tag difference?

Obert, I got a cheap one at Target for $20 and it works just fine. It takes a while to make but isn't so bad. If she's going to be using it all the time, get her a nicer one. Otherwise, maybe get a cheap one first? I got tired of using mine after a few times of using it.

Aroma 4-qt. Traditional Ice Cream Maker : Target
This is the one I'm thinking of ordering here. Has both hand crank and electric. 6qt. is $20 more. Haven't decided on that part yet. I found a different site that had reviews and it showed 4 1/2 out of 5 stars for this one. ![]()

My folks and in-laws have been making ice cream for ever.
Best of the bunch? White Mountain (a bit spendy, but very good)... of course my wife purchased an old 'pink/salmon' plastic thing at an auction for $1 probably circa 1960's ...works real well too. I've made a bunch of ice cream with a handcrank unit. Frankly I prefer the electric units...it's my mother in law who likes to have others make the stuff with the hand crank. Course my dad didn't see the need for a tractor with a cab and A/C until my brothers and I were gone...and it was he who was on the tractor. Get an electric. Wide range of prices. keys to best icecream: whole eggs and cream. so says my mom. No offense there OBG...even though I'm younger, it's entirely possible I've logged more hours of indentured servitude on a hand crank ice cream maker than you... ![]()

That may be just the case with her. Who knows she may surprise me. I was all set to order the one from Target, but intead changed my mind at the last minute and got a Sportsman Ice Cram maker from Sportsman's Guide. It is both electric and crank, you can do either. Also $10 cheaper than the other 6qt. I seen. Hope I made a good decision, we'll see. and home made ice cream for Xmas..
