I received an e-mail from a lady asking about firearm safety training for younger kids. Her son's going into 2nd grade and her daughter's going into 5th. I know the Hunter Safety programs are for 12-year-olds. Her husband hunts some and would like to take the kids hunting, but he says he was just taught by his dad and has been doing it forever, and they'd like to find a class or a firearms instructor who's familiar with teaching kids. Anyone know of such a class or person around for kids this young?

The NRA has their Eddie Eagle firearms safety program, which I've seen instructed in different venues.
Eddie Eagle Safety Program Here the 4H club does a BB gun class that incorporates firearm safety for the youngsters. Unfortunately, those don't help you in Omaha. Try contacting any shooting sports clubs to see if they have any NRA instructors?

(watch out now ) that the Hunter Ed thing can be taken by anyone but you have to be 11+(a kid can take it at 11 as long as they are turning the magical 12 in that year they take it) to actually receive your Hunter Ed card thingy and become "lincensed". I know some Hunter Ed teachers(one is a forum member) will do private instruction also. Really not sure what else a class can teach besides the common sense things that the parent should be teaching from the get go. If they are more worried about not trusting their kids with guns in the house, they'd be better off locking them up(which most will tell ya is a necessity) and waiting for them to mature more. I'm sure a couple calls to the NGPC,Shooting clubs,4-H,etc. can find ya something;just not sure how much it'll benefit from what the parent can teach.Alex |
