Fallen Heroes Marsh Memorial
The Fallen Heroes Marsh will honor those military veterans from Nebraska who were killed or wounded during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The memorial will be located on Ducks Unlimited’s Verona Complex, a key wetland area in the Rainwater Basin. The complex is 1,280 acres of seasonally managed wetlands and restored native grasslands, located 45 minutes southeast of Grand Island in Clay County.
The family of Adam Herold, a U.S. Army soldier from Nebraska who was killed in Iraq, wanted to contribute to conservation in his memory. Adam, like other members of his family, was an avid waterfowl hunter and ardent DU supporter. The memorial marsh project began as an event to honor Adam’s memory. However, DU and Adam’s family have expanded the memorial to include fallen military heroes from across the state. The Fallen Heroes Marsh will be a place where friends and families can come to hunt, watch, photograph or simply listen to ducks and remember the sacrifices made by U.S. military veterans from Nebraska.
In September of 2008 a Tribute Dinner was held to assist in the funding for this project. It was a great success not in the fact of fundraising for the memorial, however it was an opportunity where lives were touched and changed forever. The dinner was the driving force in matching wounded veterans with Ducks Unlimited members to share a sunrise and sunset, or two, together on hunting or fishing trip. Some of these trips were in the state of Nebraska and some were in other states or countries. The tales from these outings involve everything from laughter to tears, from hopes to dreams, and lifelong bonds that cannot be broken.
After over one year of planning and countless hours by volunteers, Nebraska Ducks Unlimited and the families of these Fallen Heroes would like to invite you to join us for the dedication of this memorial. The memorial is located about 45 minutes southeast of Grand Island NE, in Clay County.
