Default Cedar Log Project

I have been cutting those dang things for the last 4 years off a deer property and some pretty large cedars at times. So I thought to myself, you can do something with these.

So here is what I have been doing with them and having fun doing it.

I carve the design and message into the log, paint that, then seal log. Got a few more sitting in the garage done and working on a fishing one now.

That's pretty cool. Are you burning in the pics of the horse and deer?

I use a chain saw with a ripping chain in it to rip the logs. Then follow that with a power planer to smooth things up.

Depending on the detail of the design in most cases I use a dremel with different bits to cut in the design and lettering, so it is inset in the logs. Some of the larger designs I just use a router. Then I paint the design/lettering, let it dry, then resand the log to bring back the natural color of the cedar and seal it.

We used to do that kind of stuff in wood shop in high school. I got a paddle that I made my senior year out of a log that has the painted lettering. Those are pretty cool.

cool, be careful though in regards to selling the ones with the "N" on them. The university can be real a-holes when it comes to someone making any sort of profit without their permission using the "N" logo
