Pictures Homemade Ice Sled

$10.00 and a little time. Ski's $4.98 at the thrift shop. Lumber $5.00 at Menards.

Parts

Spacer blocks attached to ski's. I used 2X4 blocks and laid them with the un-cut sides top and bottom so I know they are straight.

Skis attached to bed

It held 250 pounds without the center brace.

I added the center ski supports. This took most of the bend out of the skis. I also attached a spine board so I can add my auger rack.

Milk crates for bucket holders and the black container ($17.00) for all my goodies. They are drilled directly on the bed with thin wood blocks to make sure they don't bust out.

I'll get this organized but it will hold all tip ups, rods, flasher, extra clothing.....

I pulled it around for awhile and it pulls great! Very little contact with the snow. I pulled it through some drifts and it looked like a crab boat busting waves. It's easy to load into your truck by yourself since it has long skis. Lift the front on the back of the truck then lift the rear and push. Slides right in! I still need to put an auger rack on it and probably some rod racks but it will fish the way it is.

I would add another cross brace sideways closer to the skis, to add a little lower rigidity.

I agree. I'd like to keep the bottom flat so it does not catch on snow drifts. I'll probably use some 90 degree metal straps.

MA Machine, now that you have had a chance to use your sled what changes would you have made

? I picked up some fancy german racing ski's for 4 bucks and will do the build this summer. I have a couple soft cushion boat seats that I'm planning to mount at front and back on swivels on a wooden storage box that I plan to build for each end. Any other afterthought design ideas you have that would make it better? width? lenth?

To tell you the truth I have not added one thing to the sled and used it all season. I really like everything about it. I did not have to add a auger rack since the auger sits on top and stays with just a bungie cord. It's a pain to drag on bare ground but on the ice and snow it is awesome, very little drag. It is easy to unload and load, in fact, I loaded it up the other day by myself with my auger strapped on top in addition to a cooler and my electronics bag. I've seen a bunch of homemade sleds on the ice this year. Every one of them looked better than a plastic tub sled. Post what you end up with. I'm going to build another one and may try another design when I get another set of ski's.
