Default crappie and structure

Went out yesterday and ended up having a pretty good day. We were catching alot of larger crappie (only caught 1 under 9" and 1 was 15") in shallow water 4 1/2' to 6' and very tight to structure. If we didnt horse them out quick enough they would wrap us up in the stumps.

Is this normal crappie behavior for this time of the year?

I once watched CatfishSteve put on a crappie clinic with minnows and a slip bobber at Zorinsky. His presentation had everything to do with structure - a submerged bush. In fact, I remember him snagging and breaking off several times.

Usually, this time of year, I'll catch them near deeper water than that, but you know they're there, that's for sure. Just the other day I was catching quite a few suspended crappies that had structure close, but they were suspended out in the middle of nowhere. Pretty interesting to hover over them and catch em that way. Quite a bit of fun, too.
