A buddy of mine and I are planning a hunting trip. We are planning on staying in a cabin owned by another friend. Although it's a new structure, it's a very small, simple, one-room cabin. I knew it didn't have plumbing, but I recently found out that we don't have power either. The owner of the cabin said that he has a propane heater that we can use. I'm concerned that this is not safe. He thought we'd be fine if we crack a window. Any thoughts? Has anyone else had a similar experience, and what did you use for heat? I was hoping to find another option aside from running a generator all night. I don't mind roughing it w/o power and plumbing, but I don't want to freeze and I'd rather not become another statistic. Thanks.

Carbon monoxide will rise. Crack a upper level window, you will also lose some heat. Have a monoxide detector or two with you.
Spent 4 days like this with no problem. ![]() |

I have a big buddy heater that's propane. It will shut off if the O2 levels get too low. It is designed for indoor use, maybe that's the deal with his heater also?

Alex T is right on the money!
I've spent more than one cold nite in my "one-man" and my -20 degree rated sleeping bag- lowest outside temp was 22 degrees. The cabin will obviously provide better protection/insulation than my tent, but you will still have to deal with "when nature calls"! I also learned to open a vent to prevent the rainstorm I produced inside the tent! ![]() Get yourself a good quality bag, and you're ready to go! Harold F.

We stay in our camper when we are deer hunting and we don't have power we use a buddy heater with a fan to help circulate the air and it is warm all night long. we also have detectors in place as a safety net.
