I have a miniworks water filter and I was talking to someone the other day that mentioned that I still needed to put chlorine drops in even after I filter. Are the drops neccessary? or are they just an extra precaution? Any light that you could shed on this topic would be helpful.

Filters filter out bacteria, but do not kill viruses. In water that may contain viruses (any water downstream from other humans, basically), you need something to kill the viruses in addition to removing the bacteria. The same stuff that kills the viruses will kill the bacteria, but won't remove the "floaties." They'll be dead floaties, but still floaties.
Sooo, if you aren't worried about viruses, just use the filter and you'll be fine. Mountain streams, for example, are fine for filters. If you are camping downstream from a town or something, use something to kill viruses. I've often used bleach - 3 drops per 1-quart Nalgene bottle full of water. Let it sit for 10 minutes, be sure to disinfect the bottle threads, and it's good to go.

*Always, Always boil your water..twice for the best results if you are collecting from a source while camping/hiking. Filters are great if your lazy but in my experience boiling your water is the most effective way to purify drinking water.

no answer for the OP question but this product looks like a great solution for having to have safe drinking water.
