Default Dauphin Island birding trip

My little brother came to visit from Omaha, this past week for a little vacation right before he leaves for Sudan for a full year of mission work with little to no contact. We grew up in a birding family and my brother is still very passionate about it, and I still take a serious interest in it. So we made the 2.5 hr drive to Dauphin Island, AL for the spring migration. This is the first place that literally hundreds of species of birds make landfall after crossing the gulf from the yucatan. Weather was not on our side for seeing birds as there was a strong south wind and clear skies, so not that many birds stopped on the island the two days we were there. Nevertheless in our opinions it was some good birding and I think we each saw four new species to our list.

My brother and I

Scarlet Tanager, we saw sometimes 6 of these at a time.

The female Scarlet Tanager

Northern Waterthrush

In this Image: 1 Cardinal, 2 male Indigo Buntings, 2 female Indigo Buntings, 3 male Blue Grosbeaks, 2 female Blue Grosbeaks, 1 Redbellied Woodpecker, and a Mourning Dove.

The four new species we saw on this trip, I was not able to get pictures of. As most birders will know, we saw a few of the most difficult and elusive warblers to find in the Eastern North America.

The four new species were: Black-throated Blue Warbler, Cape May Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, and the Painted Bunting. Bummer the painted bunting was only the female though, still haven't seen the male. We left the spot for a little while to get lunch, and while we were gone the male painted bunting came through as some of the other birders were so eager to tell us when we got back. One guy got a picture of it for proof.

We also saw several Blackpoll Warblers, Black and White Warblers, Northern Parula, Carolina Wren, Eurasion Collared Dove, Green Heron, Common Loon, Summer Tanager, American Redstart, House Finches, Brown Thrasher, and the usual gang of shorebirds, and many other more common species.

Here's a few pics of the local plant and wildlife.
