Default Nebraska Awarded $1 Million for At-Risk Fish and Wildlife Species

NGPC news release, 4/21/09:

LINCOLN, Neb. – Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced today that the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has been awarded a $1 million grant to help conserve and recover Nebraska at-risk fish and wildlife species through the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's competitive State Wildlife Grant Program appropriated by Congress.

Implementation of the funds will be through the Commission's Nebraska Natural Legacy Plan. The plan identifies conservation targets, threats to Nebraska's biodiversity and conservation strategies and is implemented with private landowners and conservation partners to impact local landscapes that benefit fish and wildlife species at risk.

In all, $9 million were awarded to 12 states, and will be matched by more than $7 million in nonfederal funds provided by the states and their partners.

“The awarding of this grant to advance our Natural Legacy Plan demonstrates the high regard that exists for all of our partners and our accomplishments to date,” said Commission Director Rex Amack. “This grant will allow us to make even greater strides in conserving Nebraska's wildlife heritage for future generations.”

Not that I am happy that we need that much, but it is good to see the money going toward a good cause.

Somebody down in Lincoln must be on the ball if we were one of only 12 states to be awarded the grants and we got 1/9th of the money.

The fed money is for the piping plover and pallid sturgeon programs (returning the river to a more native state) other than that Im not sure. And yes they probably will spend a great deal of it on deciding what to do.
