Default Can you believe this $@#*.

A few yrs back I broke one half of the windshield on my 19' sylvan. I replaced it for around $200. Last fall I had a rock come up and break it again so I just took it off for the fall and winter. I called on prices yesterday and now for one half windshield will cost me $945. Looks like my sylvan is going to look like a bass boat. I'm not going to pay that much for a 3' piece of glass.

That is outrageous! Have you tried calling other commerical glass companies? Maybe you could find one cheaper. I can't believe you can replace a car windshield for $200 but a boat is $945!!

Haven't called anyone else yet, but if it's even close to that I will be going without. And I really hate driving the boat when it's cold or raining without it. Who would you call besides a sylvan dealer?

I believe it.... Boat parts are ridiculous. At least Original manufacturer replacement parts are.

I repainted all the plastic pieces in my boat last year and this year and before I painted them I considered just buying new ones.

The blue pieces are the ones I priced. $2000 to replace all four pieces... The only ones I could see costing anymore than $100 and not much more would be the drivers console because it's a little bit more intricate and it is plastic over fiberglass.

If I remember right, the two side panels were around $250 a piece, the passenger console was $500 and the drivers console was $900.

Call around to commercial (non-boat) glass companies as some of them can get boat windshields or may do custom work and also check online.

Prices for boat glass are outrageous, and usually it is because of the heavy curve (if you have one).

Heavy curve or not, I'm not convinced it needs to cost that much. The price is expensive because they know they are the only ones that make it to fit that exact boat and if you need it you will pay it.

Sorry, I'm going to comment again because this sort of thing really pisses me off... I had a hard drive go bad and I had some stuff on it that I wanted to recover. I took it to best buy and they told me that it would be $800 - $2500 to recover the data (Stage two or stage three data recovery). I couldn't believe it so I asked him to explain the process. I just knew that it had to somehow involve shipping the hard drive into outer space and working on it in a zero gravity environment...Or maybe it had to be flown down to Florida and a team of scientists have to analyze the problem... He said, "we take the platter out that stores the data, and put in into a new case with a new arm and stuff"

I said, "So I assume this process requires a doctorate degree". He laughed and said naw, we do it in the back. Baffled I asked why it cost so much and he acknowledged it was ridiculous but said that people will pay and that's why they charge it. If you just lost all your baby pictures or something and the only way to get them back was to do the data recovery, you would pay it. My stuff, was not THAT important to me so the hard drive is now a paper weight.

It's profiteering as far as I'm concerned.

If it was behind the truck then insurance should cover it, unless you have a $1000 deductable.

Another thought. Plexi is cheap, and you can cut it yourself. You could easily get a 3 foot piece of plexi thats clear for less than that. Especially if its flat.

Just a thought.

Yep, very heavy curve. Not sure anyone could make it exept for the company. It would have to line up perfectly to match the walk through window.

Hey, I paid $950 for a windshield for my wife's CAR once. A Buick Lacrosse. Shopped around several GM dealers, over 10 non-GM glass retailers--including in Denver--and nobody could come in cheaper than the local Buick dealer.

The market is driven by what people will pay. Apparently windshields for Lacrosses and 19' Sylvan's are worth a lot to people.

I know that my wife wouldn't have been happy driving without her windshield...

But you paid for the whole windshield.
I'm not going to be the one to drive the market up.
and since my wife rarely gets into the boat I can live without it, for a while anyway.

My uncle had one made for his sylvan last summer. I will see where he got that done. I don't see him paying 900+ for a windshield. I will call him tomorrow and find out.

Ha Ha. I want to be able to see out of it though. He must have used 2 rolls of duct tape if it cost $6.

Try Glass Edge in Norfolk ( I think that is the one on north hw 81) They have "Lexan" it is like plexiglass but you can bend it 90 degrees without breaking. Maybe they can make you one that will never break again. Lexan does not scratch like plexi does so it stays clear.
