Default Question?

I have another question, what's the difference between a 2 stoke and 4 stoke motor? I looked on the net and could not find a comparison of the two.

Thanks
Don

On a 2 stroke the oil and gas are mixed together.(some you do the mixing, and some the motor does the mixing) 4 stroke are like car engines that have a oil pan and the lube is forced into the needed areas by a pump, the gas is fed in like a car. 2 stroke fires each time the piston gets to the top of the stroke, and the 4 stroke fires every other time the piston goes up.
The 4 stroke are usually more efficient. My 115 Suzuki 4 stroke uses less than half the fuel my old 70 2 stroke used.

Something else to throw into the mix. 2 stroke high efficiency, quiet motors like Optimax and Etec. I have a 75 etec and love it. Quiet, fast, smooth troll, Direct Fuel Injection, Winterize in minutes, no oil filters, timing belts, lighter, use little oil and gas. Sure that I've missed some other good points.

Here's a quote off another forum:

"Etec low gas consumption; maint is next to zero; no timing belts to worry about; no oil changes; quiet; no smoke like the old 2 strokes; no break end time-- although I am old fashioned and would take it easy the first 10 hrs; very low oil consumption; lighter; more powerful. All I have read from owners says that they also crank hot or cold at the first turn of the switch. My next motor will be an etec. I have a Yamaha 2 stroke currently. I understand the maint. schedule on a four stroke keeps it in the shop if you let a dealer do it and gets expensive. Some of it has to be done by a dealer. The four stroke owners seem to love them, but have they taken the etec ride and made the comparisons? And who is not going to love something you sunk a lot of money in and that works. The four strokes are quiet too and good on gas also. Its the rest of the stuff that I don't like."

You might google etec or optimax vs 4 stroke and you'll get all kinds of opinions.

Weight. I bought a 25 hp mercury 4 stroke a little over a year ago and it weights a lot more that the 2 stroke. I don't have power tilt and it's a handful to manually tilt. Otherwise I love it.

I have a 2 stroke on my boat and really like the low maintenance aspect of it. Like MURF said, winterizing takes minutes if you even do it. I can pretty much sort of tune it up myself. Last year we had 4 strokes on our boats in Canada. They were so quiet it really made the trip! No smoke, quiet, GREAT on gas! I think that eventually (years down the road) all boat motors may be required to be 4 strokes and I would not be surprised to see some lakes go to 4 stroke only.

Lake Tahoe and a couple others were 4 stroke only, however I think they now let Etec and Optimax on those lakes because they burn so clean.
If I remember right some one on here said that the Etec had to burn some very costly oil.

Yep, Bad news $39 a gallon Cabelas, Good news does not use much, I'm on my first gallon in my 06 ETec.

Same with my Optimax--$40/gal, but I only used two all summer.

I was out to Valley Marine couple of days ago looking at the Tracker boats. He said in a couple of years you will not be able to get a 2 stroke.

Yeah, they said that a couple of years ago.

I think you'll be seeing the Optimax and the Etec for years to come. And they are still selling the 2's on the lower priced package boats.

The Optimax and e-Tec meet all the new EPA emissions standards that "they" used to say could only be met in a 4-stroke engine.

However, I'm not entirely sure if they meet the more-stringent-than-Federal-law California standards.

So, as long as EPA doesn't raise the bar again, we should be able to get at least two brands of 2-stroke engines for years to come.
