Default Jet Skiing on the Missouri

My Dad and I were invited to ride a friends jet ski from dodge park all the way up to Sioux City. We've never done this before and actually we haven't done much boating on the mo. So we have no clue what were doing. Our friend has done it a couple times before and says he knows how to do it. My question is how many miles is it? And will all this rain affect the river? Like I said we haven't done any boating on the mo.

There is a lot of planning and forethought that needs to go into a distance ride like that--especially one going UPstream. Fueling, rest points, what to do if you have mechanical problems, how to contact help, etc.

I'm not too familiar with the MO, but I'm sure rain will effect its flows. The few times I've been on it, I have seen it full of debris from recent rains.

NP Dodge Park is at MM 627 and Sioux City is at 732, so you're looking at a 105 mile ride, upstream.

Here is a helpful map:

That is only on the part of the Missou designated as a "National Recreational River," of which the area from Sioux City downstream is not (actually it ends at Ponca SP).

Missouri National Recreational River (U.S. National Park Service)

http://www.nps.gov/mnrr/planyourvisi...d/MNRRmap1.pdf

Why are personal watercraft (jet skis) prohibited on park waters? Missouri National Recreational River is both a unit of the National Park System (like Yellowstone NP and Gettysburg NMP) and a part of the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System. The National Park Service banned personal watercraft on the waters of the National Park System effective April 20, 2000. There are only a few exceptions to this nationwide ban.

Thanks for the info. I wasn't sure how that all worked. 105 miles upstream. That would be one heck of a trip.

Even more than just knowing where the rest areas are, you need to know how to navigate the river. So often I see guys flying down the river at 45 miles an hour outside the channel. While most of the time they are fine, there is no guarantee that you have deep water. Wing dams tend to stick out further than what appears above the water. Review your boaters guide about following channel markings and WATCH FOR DEBRIS. The river moves fast always so the rains affect on that isn't too noticeable but heavy rains wash in and break up large amounts of trees, branches, trash and other strange objects (I've seen tires, whole deer...etc). I would highly suggest going out with someone that runs the river regularly.

Lastly, I am not telling you all this to discourage you, I just want you to do it safely. The river is a blast and you should definitely get out there (unless your one of the drunken idiots that flies past me while I'm fishing)

Yes. Not only its level but all the crap that it washes down which is just as dangerous as anything else you'll have to contend with. Watch out for bloated pigs ....they're kind of yucky and startle ya when you're not really expecting one to pop up so close. Another thing,if ya fall off,I wouldn't dilly dally about getting back to the jet ski,it'll keep moving down river and you could end up losing it.

I'll see your bloated pig and raise you a dead bloated cow. In July.

That's what I remember from one of my few trips on that river.

Good advise Alex on getting separated from your craft. That is one fast-moving river.

That sounds like a long haul! However if your friend has done it before obvoiusly its feasable.. I would seriously be concerned about gas!

Take some food and picnic stuff in a 'softcase' cooler. It should be a good time however for a first trip I'm not sure I would venture that far.

We racked up 60miles in an afternoon and I thought that was a lot of miles..

Well the trip was a succes We only had one little hiccup, our friend took one of the batteries out to charge it, but the charger didnt work. We got a new battery and were on the water. We cruised up to Blair, and met up with another friend. Then we all cruised the river and actually never made it to Sioux city. But in all we did 227 miles today. If any one else ever wants to do a trip like this, take some advil before you leave, your backside will thank later. It goes numb after the first 100 miles then all is good. Thanks everyone for all the info and help.

Wow, I've never been a big jetski fan, but that sounds like it would be quite an adventure. I think I would enjoy something like that once or twice. It'd be like going on a long motorcycle cruise on the water.
