Default Iowa DNR

Just thought I would share.. .

I was at manawa a week ago helping a friend get an old jetski to run correctly and had a run in with Iowa DNR.

I opened the 'good/new' jet ski up and then killed it and sat in a cove to wait for him when I notice a lund with the bow way up in the air coming towards me. I was like wtf is doing he's going to hit me.. Well he did slow down and it turned out to be DNR. He asked to check the fire extinguiser and registration. Since this was my friends ski I wasn't positive where the registration was but found it and gave it to him along with showing him the fire extinguisher. He also had me 'test' the fire extinguisher which was a first for me. (push down on the button and its suppose to pop back up)

The guy was pretty decent but that was a first for me. I told him it would be hard to check the other ski for if we shut it off it won't start. He was ok with that and was on his way. The problem with the other ski is the backpressure of the water won't allow it to start for some reason but starts fine on the trailer. *shrugs*

Yes I know a lot of people frown on jetskis but they are a lot of fun to ride! I just frown on some of the operators of them!

I rountinely check PWC for extinguishers, whistles, and registration. Yep, on most of the extinguishers without a gauge, you can test the pressure by pushing the button (with the pin still in place!!) and seeing if it pops back.

Personal watercraft (jetskis) are inanimate objects. No need to hate the object. Unfortunately, there are a handful of yahoos that get on them and forget (or never knew) how to be safe, courteous users of the water.

They give everybody else a bad name. I like to remind people that for every yahoo they see acting like a jerk on a PWC there were 10 more being safe and responsible that they didn't see.

Thanks for the reminder,It's hard to remember that there are a few whom own or borrow jet skis that have any respect for anybody else on the lake!

I'll take a pic for yaa.. I consider myself considerate but I find areas away from people to screw around on them and also areas to open them up too..

BTW I didn't know you needed a whistle/horn on a PWC,, boats yes but wasn't aware of PWC.

I won't post a picture of the guy who actually rides this, but...

Not picking on you specifically thumpper, as you may be the exception...

Therein lies the problem with some operators, they forget: PWC are a BOAT! State and federal law both consider personal watercraft a boat, therefore all the same boating laws and regulations apply--with a few exemptions for PWC (ie, throw cushion), and a few additional laws specific for PWC (ie PFD wear, lanyard use, etc).

None taken at all.. I can see why it is needed/required.

Heck the boat I bought a while ago didn't have a whistle/horn or anything on it and I don't believe the OG owner ever had one either..

this is one of the reasons my son and I took the 'safe boating' class put on by the coast guard...

there's a lot more to 'know' than just how to 'gas it up and turn it on'...

Time for the obligatory plug for boating safety classes...

Whenever you're ready tumpper, we'll hook you up with a class. Let us know when you are checked off on the shallow end at the Y.

Seriously, we highly recommend boating safety courses for boaters of all age, skill levels and vessel types. Even experienced boaters walk away having learned something. The class is required for 14 to 18 year olds who wish to operate any motorboat (including PWC).

The courses are offered all over the state by our staff, volunteer instructors and partners like the Coast Guard Auxiliary. You can view the most current list at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission - Boating Section Classes slow down as we get into summer months as many of the volunteers are on the water themselves, but we still have a good list, and classes are added all the time.

Scott
