NGPC news release, 5/19/09:
LINCOLN, Neb. – Thousands of boaters and anglers will be enjoying the Memorial Day weekend on state waters. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission urges boaters to follow regulations and practice safety. “For many people, the holiday weekend signals the perfect time to be out on the water with family and friends,” Nebraska Boating Law Administrator Herb Angell said. “However, we want to remind everyone that public waters will be very crowded, and in an effort to keep everyone safe, we encourage boat operators to stay sober and alert and know Nebraska's boating laws before heading out on the water.” There were more than 40 boating accidents and two boating-related fatalities in Nebraska in 2008, and conservation officers made several arrests for boating under the influence. The Commission offers the following safety rules for boat and personal watercraft operators: - Designate an operator. Do not drink alcohol and operate a boat. - Take a boating safety course. Visit OutdoorNebraska.org/boating for a schedule of classes. - Wear a life jacket. Children under 13 years of age are required by law to wear a life jacket while onboard a moving boat. - Do not overload your boat with people or equipment. Check the capacity plate for the maximum weight or the maximum number of people the boat can carry safely. - Use navigation lights at all times when on the water at night. Check lights before it gets dark. - Observe the 30-yard law. It applies to all vessels and prohibits operation at speeds greater than idle speed within 90 feet of any vessel, harbor, marina, swimming beach, landing pier, fishing pier, or anchorage. - Personal watercraft operators should not jump the wake of another boat within 50 yards. - Personal watercraft operators should pay attention to their surroundings and stay clear of other vessels. - Make sure everyone operating a personal watercraft is aware of boating laws, age requirements and how to safely operate a personal watercraft. The owner can be held responsible. “Water levels certainly are better this year, which may remove some of the obstruction issues we had in the previous few years, but that does not mean that boaters should become less diligent,” Angell said. “Caution is always encouraged.”

Have to correct a typo:
- Wear a life jacket. Children under 13 years of age are required by law to wear a life jacket while onboard ANY boat. (Moving or not)
