Why they call it fishing.....

and not catching.

5/30/09, Louisville 2 (again).

Decided to squeeze in one more outing this month. Hit the park about 4:30 PM and put everything together and was in the water by 5:00 PM.

Talk about a dole drum day....The weather was nice, but the stupid little hassles were up front and center. Only way I can describe is to make a list.

1. Spooled up all of my poles with fresh line last night. Big mistake, I either over spooled them, used crappy line or spooled them backwords....nothing but trouble with my line today.

2. Cotton in the water....yuck, I remember this stuff pissed me off last year as well. It gets on your line in balls and makes it tough to cast these balls through your guides.

2a. Had one overspool that was so bad, I had to tear my real apart and cut line to fix it up....Errrr.

3. The fishing was fairly s l o w.

Got into a few nice sized Blue Gill about 5:45 or so. A few 7", a 7 1/2" and 2 true 8 inchers.

Only got a picture of one of the 7".....

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=777&pictureid=10552

Because....

4. Most of the fish I caught today were deeply hooked. I spend more time digging out hooks and washing blood of my tray than ever before. I must not have been on my game at all with my hooksets.

5. Lost 4 or 5 decent bass at various stages....the last of which jumped in the air and spit my jig and senko right back at me 3 feet from my tube. Again, my hooksets sucked today.

Finally decided to kick in at about 7:30 PM, and managed this little guy from the bottom....(My first Louisville cat of the year):

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=777&pictureid=10553

Then just as I was getting ready to go ashore, I finally got a couple baby bass to go for my wacky worm....only to deep hook them so bad that I did not even think about spending any more time looking for their big brothers.

All in all, it was a pretty sucky outing....But better than work. Will have to go out again in the next few days to get the bad taste out of my mouth.

Holiday Weekend Outings

Saturday evening grabbed about 7 poles and went with the little kids and wife to the local puddle and wet some worms.

Had a blast from the shore. The wife was the winner that is for sure. She nabbed a couple nice sized cats and then just to spite me, she got this little guy:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=766&pictureid=10310

All I could manage was about 4 slimy trout, a couple smaller crappies, some bluegills, and then a small sunfish about the size of my thumb.

My boy got a couple trout and some bluegill, and my youngest daughter put the pole down and hit the social circuit around the lake........She had already been out with me 4 or 5 times this year, so moderately decent fishing did not spark her interest as much as hanging out with her friends.

On to Sunday afternoon at Louisville. The holiday crowds made the place look like down town Mexico City....but after about 20 minutes and a bribe, I was able to secure a parking spot.

I know -- stupid to try to fish during amateur hour but I was bored, and the overcast skies cooled it down enough to make it very tempting to hit the water.

Once I kicked about 50 yards from shore, I might as well have been the only one in the park.....Float tubes are the *only *way to go.

Needless to say, I played with the little Bass for a while as usual:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=766&pictureid=10309

And had a plethora of 7" Bluegill tug at my line:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=766&pictureid=10307

And then to make things interesting, the little bass and his bluegill buddy decided to team up on me and try to take me out at the same time on different rods:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=766&pictureid=10306

But the Generic fight of the evening goes to this little 8 1/2" fellow:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=766&pictureid=10308

On lite tackle, playing with 8" bluegill is about as fun as it gets around here. This fishy and a couple of it's cohorts really represented today.

Got into a few Crappie as well.....all 8 1/2 - 10 inches, nothing to write home about.

I am finally convinced that all of the kitties at Louisville are officially ignoring me. Looking at the shock reports from the G&P it looks like they are far and few in between anyway.

Until next time.

Ok it is May 21st. I have had a few "trial" outings this year, but have not been able to break free from work or home long enough to have a real fishing day....Until today.

To celebrate my freedom for the day, I decided to break out all of the gadgets, and head to Walnut Creek to chase Crappie.

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=760&pictureid=10202

I am disgusted that this far into the year I have not been able to get out and fish enough to actually chase Crappie (one of my favorite pastimes) -- only a few outings throwing plastic worms @ green carp. The plastic worms stayed home today, and the Road Runners came out....

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=760&pictureid=10203

First fish was not a crappie, but I will take it. Silly guy must have though my pony head looked like stinkbait......1st one of these for the year, so he gets his picture taken with the only thing on the lake uglier than him.

Ok, enough messing around, time to hone in on the paper mouths...

And we have a (little) winner:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=760&pictureid=10204

Game on now. I am going to stop @ 20:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=760&pictureid=10206

They are getting a little bigger now (if 11 or 12 inches can be considered "bigger") :)

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=760&pictureid=10209

Took a break to see if the Bluegill were getting any bigger from last year.

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=760&pictureid=10205

Played with the gills for about a half hr. until I determined they are all still nice and healthy and about 7 or 8 inches....Right where I left them last year.

.........and 20:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=760&pictureid=10210

Now it's getting hot...and I am getting a nice farmer sun burn. Time to pack it in and hit Taco Bell.

I wish I could do this every Thursday morning/afternoon.....Errrrrr.

Today was perfect fishing weather. If you did not get out today, how dare you call yourself a fisher person.

Hit my regular haunt at about 3 PM with the Super Fat Cat in tow. Had a new rubbermaid lid to test out, and decided my back needed a break from the non-inflatable seat in my trusty old ODC-420.

The bank tanglers and bucket brigade sure had the perimeter surrounded today, that's for sure. Still beats dodging the power squadron.

As is becoming habit for me this year, I rigged up one pole wacky (with a new flat head wacky jig), and threw my bobber out on the second pole with a worm.

Just like last time, I might has well have left the worm pole home. Nothing but about 3 6" bluegill on that pole.

Had an OK day with green carp giving my wacky jig a workout. About 7 or 8 baby bass like this (notice the flat wacky jig):

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=698&pictureid=9378

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=698&pictureid=9379

And then a couple of their older brothers like this 16" skinny:

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=698&pictureid=9377

Putted around for a couple hours total and enjoyed the nice weather listening to good tunes on my "fryPod"....Could not have asked for better weather. Could have asked for less people and more fish, but who am I to biiiiaaatCH.

P.S. -- Only one other craft on the water today (a baby bass boat with oars) and 2 anglers, who were of course having pretty good luck with the crappie that are always running away from me.

The youngest 2 are so competitive. Decided they wanted to have a "fish off" the other night to start their season.

Bite was a bit slower than it has been, but they each got into a hot spot.

Sam struck first and nailed 2 Bluegills in a row.

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=649&pictureid=8741

Tyge was getting mad because he could not find a "hot spot"....But oh what difference a year makes. Last year he would have gotten bored and went off to play. Not this year, he went up and down the bank for about 45 minutes until he found his spot.

Image: http://www.nefga.org/forum/picture.php?albumid=649&pictureid=8740

They ended up ties at 2 fish each.

Maybe if it warms a bit, we will have a rematch this week.
