How would a beginner go about catching a wiper from shore? Or a white bass? Or a smallie? Or a perch?
It's possible, isn't it? If you know a little about any of those species, and have the courage to share some of that information publicly, drop me a PM. The Beginner's Corner needs information on all four species for these topics: Illustration: Rod/Reel: Line: Hook / weight / swivel / bobber (the "terminal rig"): Best baits: Artificial alternatives: Technique: Time of Day: Seasonality: Member suggestions:

Much of what I initially learned about wiper fishing, came from Andrew. Then I went out and slaughtered his techniques.
To be honest, now I'm not sure what I have figured out through fishing for them, and what I just adopted from him. But with his consent, I will tackle the wiper piece. It could serve as a good starting point for WB too, then others could provide some tips specific to white bass... as a suggestion.

My first wiper was this past spring at Harlan County Reservoir.
I was using an ultra light setup, 6 # test line, and a rapala jointed minnow. I was casting between trees that were sticking up out of the water, where the LMBs were jumping.

To catch smallies I would talk to badbass. Although he fished from a boat, he would still know some stuff about them.
What I know about smallies: Illustration: Rod/Reel: Med-light/Med. Open face or bait caster Line: 4-12 lb test Hook / weight / swivel / bobber (the "terminal rig"): Bullet weight, hook tube rigged texas style Best baits: Green Pumpkin seed 4 inch tube. Artificial alternatives: see above Technique: jig bait on or around rocky beaches/shore lines. Pitch around pea gravel to boulders Time of Day: Seasonality: Member suggestions: Badbass
