The money argument may get old, but it's very valid and has indeed ruined baseball in many ways. The money pays for better players. And saying the Twins didn't go out and play the game is also pretty disrespectful to those players.
Yankees payroll = $201,449,189
Twins payroll = $65,299,266
The amount of talent on the Yankees team vs that of the Twins is not very comparable. Yet, the Twins made it pretty darn far.
I agree the game still has to be played, and the Royals' payroll is more than the Twins and the Royals were worse, thus it's not all payroll, but the ability to lure better players to your team with money is huge. Especially when the Yankees dish out more money per year than four teams combined, and more than twice as much as 22 of the teams. A more telling number is that the Yankees median salary is TWICE as much as the second highest median salary. It's a wonder why they don't win it all every year.
